Dark Knight III: The Master Race #8 Review

The penultimate issue is here as Superman and what remains of Batman face off against an army of Kryptonians hellbent on taking over the world. Luckily for us, Wonder Woman has an army of her own that stands in their way, but is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The official summary reads:

Baal’s Kryptonian army has invaded Themyscira. Wonder Woman and the Amazons will show them why that was a deadly mistake.

Why does this book matter?

If you’ve been following along this long it’s more than likely you’ll continue anyway, but how does this sound for a good deal: Full on war with the Amazonians! Given the movie trailer that hit on Saturday that featured just that, you can get a little bit more of that flavor here.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Dark Knight III: The Master Race #8 Review
Noooooo!

Given the cliffhanger Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello left us off with, it’s satisfying to see that story beat wrapped up rather quickly in the opening pages of this issue. That allows the rest of the issue to focus on the Amazonian war, which has some major 300 vibes about it. Aside from that, this issue sets up the Bat-crew’s next move, gives a neat scene with the Flash whose tangled up in wires, and allows Superman’s daughter a chance to redeem herself.

Overall, Adam Kubert does a good job on pencils (with inks by Klaus Janson) with a lot of the art in here mimicking or at least looking to be a bit of an homage to Miller’s style. You certainly get that vibe from the hundreds of spears sticking up from a mass of soldiers and close ups of facial expressions. Kubert really makes Wonder Woman shine in this issue and if you’re a fan of hers you best read this one. Her armor looks fantastic, the stars on her shorts pop in customary Miller style, and she comes off as incredibly powerful and exuberant in battle. There’s a fantastic double page spread showcasing her prowess complete with a battle raging under her and Kryptonians spraying laser beams out of their eyes across the battlefield.

Neat, but simple bat cave.

It can’t be perfect can it?

The issue doesn’t do enough to tell us what Batman’s crew are up to. We know they’re doing something, but it’s never explained beyond that. With the remaining pages focused on all out war and no check in with the Bat-crew, you’re left scratching your head. To make matters worse, the cliffhanger in this issue is more of a vague promise for doom rather than any definitive message. Combine these two issues and I suspect most won’t be greatly anticipating the next issue beyond wanting to see how it all ends.

Is It Good?

Save for a somewhat limp conclusion, this is a fine issue that brings a full on war to the Amazonians. Kubert excels at drawing this battle and Wonder Woman fans will be missing out big time if they don’t read this issue.

Is It Good?
An excellent issue as an all out war takes place, but you'll be left scratching your head as far as where it wraps up.
Awesome Wonder Woman scenes as Kubert draws an awesome battle
Opening puts a period on the last issue's cliffhanger
Great for Wonder Woman fans...
Superman and Batman aren't really in this one
The Bat crew opens the issue, but not much of anything comes of it
The cliffhanger isn't much of one with scant details and no real ramp up of drama

Good
