Avengers: Infinity War saw an impressive Thursday night preview of $39 million, one that made it the highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe offering for a Thursday night preview ever — but the question remained, would the film be able to topple earnings juggernauts and fellow Disney franchise movies Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi in the opening weekend category?
As it turns out, yes. And then some. Disney has reported that Avengers: Infinity War‘s all-time record opening domestic weekend earnings are an estimated $258.2 million, surpassing the estimates of $250 million from yesterday and placing it convincingly above the previous record of $247.9 million held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Infinity War has also surpassed previous record holder Fate of the Furious ($541.9M) with an all-time record global opening of $640.9M.
Were our very own Robert Reed’s predictions that Avengers: Infinity War wouldn’t outgross Black Panther off the mark or will the red hot start to Infinity War‘s earnings sizzle out? Sound off in the comments.
