Judging by the Cover – 9/11/19 new releases

Dave and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media and Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Dave’s Picks:

Batman Eternal Omnibus HC
Cover art by Dustin Nguyen

DC Comics

I’m not exactly sure if this is a new cover or not, but boy is it striking. This was my favorite cover on the Comics Podcast and I’m sticking to it! The contrast of the yellow on the left with Batman and the detail of his suit and Arkham Asylum is amazing. The detailing in the bats that come out of his cape is intense too. The fact that the wavy yellow area is actually the inside of his cape makes this one for me.

Spider-Man #1
Variant cover art by Gabriele Dell’otto

Marvel Comics

There’s something very sad about this cover which we don’t normally see with Spider-Man cover art. The darkness is part of it, but also his body language and the shadows here. The contrast with the moon is definitely a Batman motif you don’t see with Spidey either. Great cover!

Rumble #16
Cover art by Gerardo Zaffino

Image Comics

This book is intended for mature readers and the cover says that in droves. From the horrific-looking dog who wants to eat your face to the practically undead-looking Viking I know I should be wary of entering this story. I think what sells me on this cover the most, however, is the positioning of the characters and that thick sword. Notice how the sword never ends on the page and runs right off. It’s like it goes on forever much like the screams on these characters faces. It has a haunting appeal too, possibly in part because it’s in black and white.

Eric’s Picks:

Venom #18
Variant cover art by Tyler Kirkham

Judging by the Cover - 9/11/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

Symbiote goodness! I love my Venom covers with an abundance of tendrils shooting out in various directions, so the busyness here is a good thing IMO. Add in the details of the razor-sharp teeth, disgusting slobber, and curvy tongue and there’s a lot going on. It’s kind of chaotic, but also controlled enough that you don’t have any trouble figuring out where to look. Good work all in all.

Silver Surfer: Black #4
Variant cover art by Alex Garner

Marvel Comics

This cover successfully incorporates two focal points while also working as one coherent whole. The way the Power Cosmic slips and slides between the two is quite cool, and it’s always nice to be reminded that the character didn’t start his life out as a chrome-colored nudist. Norrin Radd’s expression here is very well-done. The colors in the background are also lovely and compliment the main subject matter without being too busy or clashing.

Absolute Carnage: Symbiote of Vengeance #1
Cover art by Philip Tan

Judging by the Cover - 9/11/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

This is both Cool™ and humorous. As with the Venom cover there’s a lot going on here and I dig it. There’s all the details to the various flames (both on Ghost Rider’s head and coming off of his bike), the twisting chains, the leather, and more. Plus the more I look around, the more comedy I find to enjoy. The second flaming skull character getting dragged around by their arm? The incredibly over-the-top symbiote face in the background on the right? Nice.
