‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black White & Green’ #2 turns its focus to the Turtles’ friends and family

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black White & Green’ #2 is a great second issue.

The beauty of an anthology book like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White & Green isn’t just the cool color scheme – it’s the fact that writers are given a chance to touch upon every aspect of the Turtles’ history. And with the Heroes in a Half-Shell hitting 40, that’s quite a bit of history to draw from. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White & Green #2 capitalizes upon this, putting more focus on the Turtles’ friends and family (though the Turtles still make an appearance.)

Like the first issue, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black, White & Green #2 consists of four tales:

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

-“Buddycount” stars Casey Jones, with story and art by Gavin Smith.

-“If By Feast or Famine” is a noir-esque tale starring Michelangelo, featuring story and art by Tyler Boss.

-“The Green Dogu” has April O’Neil and the Turtles chasing after a mystical artifact, with story and art by Javier Rodriguez.

-“Deadly Delivery” is written by Mikey Way, illustrated by Nikola Cizmesija, and colored by Lee Loughridge; it features a story where pizza restaurants across New York start closing up, prompting the Turtles to investigate.

This batch of stories ranges from hilarious to badass and even a heartwarming moment or two. Case in point: “If By Feast Or Famine” leans way into the noir tropes, down to Mikey giving his own monologue. But it’s frequently undercut by the other Turtles; Raph asks Mikey if he took his trenchcoat, while Leo asks “Why are you talking like someone kicked you in the throat?” On the flip side, “Buddycount” features Casey doing what he does best: delivering bodily injury with various sporting implements.

Each artist even has a style that fits their respective story. For “Buddycount,” Smith delivers the same sense of intense action and detailed creature work that he brought to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Alpha. Boss’s hyper-reactive artwork for “If By Feast Or Famine” is perfect for the more comedic take he’s going for, while Rodriguez manages to capture the visuals of the 1987 TMNT animated series in “The Green Dogu.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Black White & Green #2 continues to show that no matter what colors you work with, the best Turtles stories are the ones that embrace everything this franchise has to offer.
