Judging by the Cover – 5/15/19 new releases

Dave and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media and Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Dave’s Picks:

Batgirl Vol. 5: Art of the Crime
Cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco

DC Comics

I picked this one for the AiPT! Comics Podcast for a good reason, it harkens to John Byrne’s excellent Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #101 in how it uses negative space. This one uses yellow in a striking way almost making Batgirl part of the background. The city pops so well and her pose jumping down on us is dynamic as all heck.

Bloodborne #12 (Game art cover)
Cover art by Brad Simpson and Piotr Kowalski

Titan Books

Talk about a moody cover. I know it’s mostly architecture, but it’s hauntingly done. The use of red in the river, and then into the city, seems to suggest blood is spilling and it’s running downstream. The mixed media is at work in the soil and branches giving an almost organic look as if thumbprints were pressed into the banks of the river. Great stuff.

Fairlady #2
Cover art by Claudia Balboni and Marissa Louise

Judging by the Cover - 5/15/19 new releases

Image Comics

This wraparound cover draws your eye no matter which way you look at it. Opened like this you go from the burning owl to this almost smoke-creation from left to right. It sort of bounces from top-left to bottom-right, spilling into books and skeletons. It’s a creative use of space.

Eric’s Picks:

Joe Golem: Occult Detective – The Conjurers #1
Cover art by David Palumbo

Dark Horse Comics

My top pick for the week goes to this one. Few things are cooler to me than well-detailed shots of fish that capture the texture of their scales and their bulging black eyes, so this cover is right up my alley. The way the fish in the foreground is positioned so that its eye is right where the man’s would be is awesome. The coloration here is also strong; the blues and grays look very good together and have a nice, cold feel to them. Composition, color, detail work– everything here works.

Port of Earth #10
Cover art by Andrea Mutti

Judging by the Cover - 5/15/19 new releases

Image Comics

I’m a big fan of artists rendering subject matter within other subject matter, so I love Mutti’s design choices here. Both the man in the gas mask and the tall, thin spires would be imposing on their own, but they’re even moreso when paired like this. The color of the fabric matching works perfectly as a stormy sky as well. All in all, this is a successful combination of different elements into one cohesive whole.

Gideon Falls #13
Variant cover art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Judging by the Cover - 5/15/19 new releases

Image Comics

I’m immediately a bit grossed out by this cover, but that just means it’s working. The quiet terror here is great; we can’t see the man’s mouth but his eyes and posture make it very clear how he’s feeling. The red-orange of the roaches also stands out well against the rest of the image’s cool tones.
