Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media and Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.
Dave’s Picks:
Tony Stark: Iron Man #13 (Crain Marvels 25th Anniversary Tribute)
Variant cover art by Clayton Crain
I’ve always liked Crain’s work but this one takes the cake. It’s dark and scary, fitting for a world ender cosmic entity like Galactus. I love how Crain integrates shine into Iron Man’s armor, the skin of the woman running, and Galactus’s suit. You get a sense of texture due to the use of light. Every hero on the cover feels superhuman for various reasons. It’s a cover you’ll linger on.
American Gods: The Moment of the Storm #3
Variant cover art by David Mack
I’m a sucker for mixed media. Note the lace mixed in with paper and what appear to be oils. This is a work of art and you’ll know it from the second you lay eyes on it. Give it time and you’ll soon realize how complex it is and how Mack has intertwined the figure, the background, and the subtle flowing details. The female figure is also detailed, making it strikingly contrast with the more abstract work around her. Your eye is drawn and you’re swimming in the art.
Hellboy And The B.P.R.D.: The Beast Of Vargu
Variant cover art by Duncan Fegredo
The white figure in the backdrop is an excellent way of creating contrast while also giving us a bit of meaningful detail. Fegredo renders Hellboy and the beast he’s fighting with great detail, which is particularly important given how small they are on the cover. The color and inking are subtly done, drawing your eye and making you linger. It’s an excellent cover.
Eric’s Picks:
Sabrina the Teenage Witch #3
Variant cover art by Victor Ibáñez
A Sabrina cover that actually shows her conducting witchcraft? Sign me up! I dig the fun of the cauldron, from all the eyes to the classic green color. All the various ingredients strewn about and the expression on Sabrina’s face are also great. Plus: Salem!!
Assassin Nation #4
Cover art by Erica Henderson
Super cute, with great colors. This is one of my favorite comics right now, and seeing Erica Henderson work on a book all about killers and brutal violence is great. This cover delivers both assassins and cutesy charm. That “Kill” bracelet”? Awesome. The characters’ expressions? Very funny. All around, this is a cool image.
Age of X-Man: Nextgen #5
Cover art by Chris Bachalo & Tim Townsend
All the contrasts going on here work very well. There’s the totally blank sky in the background, starkly different from the bottom with all the blades of grass and their shadows. You have the students marching along looking fairly serious, and then the chickens just…being chickens in front of them. It’s a cute, and pleasantly strange, mix.
