The biggest problem with massive crossover events within comic book companies is that titles commonly will lose focus on the story they are already telling to make way for a more muddled universal tale.
X-Men #11 is a one-off issue that takes place in the middle of the events in Empyre. This already puts the X-Men titles at a disadvantage, but given the predicament, Jonathan Hickman manages to tell a story focusing on one of our favorite mutants: Magneto.
While the story itself is jumbled and tough to follow, Jonathan Hickman utilizes this time to explain why Magneto is a hero, and ultimately why Magneto was right.
“A hero fights for those who can’t win. Against seemingly unstoppable forces. Against overwhelming odds. And whenever they are asked to risk their own lives to save someone else… They ignore the danger and step forward to be counted.”
As Krakoa is under siege by aliens resembling plants and trees, Magneto marches into the battlefield was grace and ease. Whether it be crushing enemies with satellites from the sky or utilizing freshly produced brittle metal out of the volcanos of Krakoa to defend his home, Magneto is here for his people. That has always been Magneto’s story, and it holds true to his character in this issue.
The art by Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho is truly beautiful in this issue. There many panels from this particular issue that I want to have framed on my wall, all centering around Magneto. (Can we just stop and talk about how much of hunk Magneto is in that bath scene?)
Overall, this story has no bearing on the greater X-Men universe, but if you are a fan of Magneto, this issue will still be worth a read.
