This whole review could arguably be written as just ‘look, it’s Steve McNiven.’ That would be enough, even. Steve McNiven is probably the best of the photorealist artists working for Marvel at the moment, and he really makes this comic look like it came straight from the screen to the comics page. In fact, McNiven complements this photorealism with a stippled, almost Signac-styled coverage that highlights the textures and the lived-in nature of the Star Wars universe.
According to Marvel’s solicit, the story is as follows:
BOBA FETT will stop at nothing to get the job done. Transporting his latest, greatest bounty—HAN SOLO—should be an easy payday. But there’s just one problem. A BIG one. And someone is going to pay for it…
Plot wise, this isn’t complicated, and nor should it be. It’s Mortal Kombat, but in Star Wars, culminating in — as you should know from the solicits — a War of the Bounty Hunters with the carbonite slab of Han Solo as the prize. This isn’t exactly a mind-bending story.
But you know what? It doesn’t have to be. Sometimes you want to watch Boba Fett stab some freaky Star Wars aliens, or shoot them with his laser gun. There’s a line between good and fun. There are movies like Sucker Punch or Pacific Rim, books like, well, any given Star Wars or Star Trek novel, which are not works of high art, and not works which are going to change the world’s artistic scene. But they’re fun to read.
That’s basically what War of the Bounty Hunters kickoff issue is. A perfectly fun, perfectly fine beginning for a story that isn’t any more than what the name says.
