Uncanny Avengers was a curious but rewarding stop in the Fall of X era of the current X-Men books. Written by Gerry Duggan, who also scribed the standalone X-Men title as well as other event books, meant that this title was sold as a consequential book, and not a shameless attempt to force a separate fandom into an event. It directly continued the Captain Krakoa storyline from X-Men, and understandably, made Orchis a central villain. Thanks to some beautiful artwork and focused, super heroics-centered script, Uncanny Avengers: The Resistance was an enjoyable romp that connects to the larger Fall of X event without being burdened with its chronology.
In what is essentially a Captain America title with X-Men involved, Uncanny Avengers collects #1-5 of the miniseries, with some material from the Free Comic Book Day issue as well. Plot wise, it has the Avengers and the X-Men unite after deadly attacks target the U.S. and Krakoan governments, fueling anti-mutant sentiment. Captain America recruits a team including mutants Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver, Psylocke, and Monet to uncover the identity of the rogue Captain Krakoa and prevent a global conflict, leading to confrontations with the Mutant Liberation Front and revealing who is behind the Captain Krakoa mask.

It’s a pretty straightforward adventure, with Captain America making rousing speeches against mutant hate, and working in fun character moments between its team members. Having a team with Steve Rodgers and Deadpool working together is a fun idea, considering the opposite continuums each character swings within. Duggan has a knack for making his superhero teams feel like a family you want to be part of, and that approach to storytelling shines in this title. The art, competently provided by Javier Garron and Emilio Laiso, gives even the quiet character moments energy and enthusiasm. Morry Hollowell also deserves credit for their colors, which give the entire book a Saturday morning cartoon ambiance.
Marvel Comics
While it is Fall of X related, this book could have been published at any point in the last 20 years and it would have worked. It’s Captain America using his clout and influence to help his allies in the X-Men as they face backlash over crimes committed by a mutant imposter, with the message of acceptance and not rushing to judgement in condemnation of a group. In that sense, even X-fans who have not followed the post-Hickman era of books could easily feel at home with this title.
As for supplementals, we get a large assortment of variant covers, but most of which are given the quarter-page treatment. While not a groundbreaking work, Uncanny Avengers: The Resistance is a fun, attentive adventure that teams up some fan-favorite X-Men with Captain America in a satisfying arc, supported by some beautiful superhero art.
