‘Napalm Lullaby’ #4 maximizes the chaotic escape

‘Napalm Lullaby’ #4 shows our heroes can survive a Superman-like threat.

If you’re looking for big action from a fascist Supergirl-looking character, then Napalm Lullaby will satisfy that itch. The series has shown how far society separates the poor from the rich when a godlike child falls to Earth and gets into the wrong hands. Now, Sarah and Sam are the targets of their sister, who needs to wipe them from the face of the Earth so as to maintain “order” among the devout faithful. Many will die.

Napalm Lullaby #4 picks up where we left off with the Supergirl-looking sister named the Janitor taking down entire buildings in order to capture Sam and Sarah. She’s killing many, and Sam can feel their deaths due to his mental powers. Meanwhile, Sarah tries to keep them both alive as they dodge rubble, and the Janitor shoots energy blasts from her mouth. Sarah and Sam are in a restricted believer area, and it appears their Janitor is fine with killing thousands to ensure these two are stopped.

It may sound silly that Sarah and Sam can avid laser blasts and rubble as the Janitor charges them, but it turns out Sarah can foresee things and knows just where to go as she’s moving. Writer Rick Remender seeds a compelling mystery with Sarah’s powers, which leads to a few surprises in her vision and a clutch cliffhanger.

As far as the narrative, there’s some talk about winners and losers through Janitor and Sam. One could reduce it to the victors writing history and the losers, but Janitor makes an interesting point about how it’s all about earning the win. She says this while topless after a deadly blow with a psionic blade.

Bengal keeps the chaos of falling debris and crashing floors fairly easy to follow. Sarah and Sam are tumbling through the issue, while Janitor is outright nuts in her attacks. There’s an epic, near-full-page spread of Sam sprinting towards Janitor, who aims to kill Sarah, that draws the eye well and plays off the next page as he slashes Janitor straight across the front. Due to the dust and white surfaces, much of this issue is washed in white, which works well with the holy theme of their location. The final page was far too dark, making it hard to know what you’re looking at.

If there was a purpose to this issue, it would be to show Sarah and Sam that they can survive in the most impossibly dangerous scenarios. They also work well together. The issue does feel repetitive, though, as the Janitor tears through buildings and rubble falls from cover to cover. Sarah’s internal monologue helps add a human element as she wishes she could have saved her dad, but this chapter is mostly an inevitable race towards setting up a major confrontation.

Napalm Lullaby #4 features the awesome power of the Janitor and our heroes as they dodge death on every page. In a world of fascist faith, can two rogue heroes change things? By the end of this issue, it may seem impossible!
