‘Giant-Size Daredevil’ #1 review: Kingpin claims this issue

Marvel is giving Hornhead the Giant-Size treatment. But Kingpin is not about to let that slide!

Back in the Bronze Age of Comics, Marvel celebrated adventures in a truly grand way by offering “Giant-Size” comics, bursting at the seams with heroics and larger-than-life storytelling. This year, Marvel celebrates the 50th anniversary of these colossal tomes; this also continues Daredevil’s 60th anniversary with a larger special issue. Brace yourselves as the current volume’s story arc unveils the possession of Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, as he wreaks havoc in Hell’s Kitchen.

Saladin Ahmed continues to pen this extra chapter, with artist Paul Davidson joining the action. Frankly, you might be disappointed if you’re expecting a significant Daredevil presence. Yes, he’s in the comic but is more of a silent observer, blending into the background. While I appreciate the bonus issue, I question its value at a price point of $6.99. The leading story could have been integrated into the main series by tying into another portion of the volume, creating a more impactful issue.

The giant does give us something interesting with an insight into Fisk’s thoughts as a Sin possesses him. In the subtext of Fisk’s contemplations, we can gather which Sin has hold over Fisk; I won’t reveal it as I want you to maximize your enjoyment of this story. I like the choice, but I wish it would’ve been further down the line, as Fisk will be the fourth Sin that Daredevil will face. So, if Fisk isn’t the “final boss,” then I am very interested in how Saladin Ahmed plans to wrap this arc.

The lead story will continue in the main series, and the rest of Giant-Size is a reprint of Daredevil (Vol 1) #170. What is so special about that issue? Frank Miller wrote and drew it, and that issue started the Daredevil/Kingpin rivalry. It is a fun revisit or exposure to a wonderful era in Daredevil history. The Editor’s page plugs the Daredevil by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson trade paperback series as a great way to continue those adventures, and I would also echo that if you have not had the pleasure of reading those issues, you can probably find an older edition of the collection for a nice price.

Delve into the unique dynamic between Sin and the Kingpin as they storm Hell’s Kitchen. We get a rare glimpse into Fisk’s mind and bear witness to his relentless attacks. While this is Daredevil’s Giant-Size issue, Fisk is the one calling the shots, leaving you to ponder his motives for luring DD in. This interlude to the Introductory Rites story arc hopefully ramps the excitement for the rest of the adventure.

This was the first time we got the "witness" the thoughts of a Sin-possessed character; it would be great to get that in future possessions and with previous characters
At the hefty price point, I would want a strong celebration instead of a character interval and reprint; definitely trade wait this portion if you can
