‘Wonder Woman’ #11 highlights the danger of an Amazo

It’s an Amazo versus Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark!

Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s Wonder Woman has made a case for this character as the greatest hero of them all. Now with Absolute Power kicked off, it’s time for a three-part tie-in. Amanda Waller’s Amazos are stealing the powers of heroes, and in Wonder Woman #11, one is coming for Diana. Oh, and the Justice League Dark!

Wonder Woman #11 opens with a card game. Spectre, Wonder Woman, John Constantine, Detective Chimp, and a few others are biding their time as they lay low to avoid causing trouble. Heroes are being framed for great tragedies, but little do they know an Amazo is after them. It’s a slow start to the story with a lot of dialogue that chews up the time and highlights personalities but doesn’t add much to the story.

Enter an Amazo, and things go from quiet to chaotic. As the heroes take on the Amazo, the robot seems to rattle off old English verses. It’s a mystery that is eventually solved thanks to Detective Chimp, although I’m not sure it adds much to the story. It seems so random, and it doesn’t help understand the Amazo. Another important element of the fight is that the heroes don’t know the Amazo can take their powers. Since the reader knows it’s a tense fight, we watch them piece together what it’s doing as it snatches their powers.

Fans of Wonder Woman will delight in her kicking tons of butt, utilizing her tiara and holding her own against the Amazo. Tony S. Daniel maximizes the impact of her blows and stretches the pages with a good mix of layouts. Daniel seems to be using motion blur in the art, adding a cinematic quality. King also manages to stick Wonder Woman’s selflessness into the action, which is a common theme for his run.

Belén Ortega and Tom King continue their Trinity backups with part 8, titled “World’s Finest.” This story centers on Jon, Damian, and Trinity going to a concert. Damian is totally bored, but he’s all in once he sees who is singing. It’s a fun way of showing Trinity’s obsession with a pop star and how even grumpy folks like Damian can realize how great pop culture can be. Heck, even villains! Ortega does a fabulous job maximizing the drama of the singer’s stage presence. She also does a fantastic job aging up the heroes. Once again, King and Ortega offer up a cute, endearing, and super fun tale.

If you like action, you’ll enjoy Wonder Woman #11. I can’t say the dialogue worked for me, from Detective Chip to the Amazo, but Daniel impresses with the action. Pair that with another excellent backup, and it’s a solid issue.

The backup is a joy!
Main story hammers home the threat of the Amazo
Wonder Woman's selflessness shines through
A lot of the dialogue, especially from the Amazo, feels overly long and unnecessary
