‘Empyre’ #4 makes you question everything including Hulk’s past experiences

Empyre #4 is very twisty including a key reveal involving She-Hulk.

Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned. Read our Empyre #4 review for more.

Empyre has lived up to its wartime event status every issue and with any war are surprise wins and tactical strategy. Nevermore so is that apparent than in Empyre #4 which features a few different twists. Both sides of the battle, be it the Cotati or the Skrull/Kree, have been hiding something.

One surprise I did not see coming involves Hulk aka Jennifer Walters and how she’s a mole for the enemy. But wait, “she’s a good guy,” you’re probably thinking. There is a clue that goes back to Empyre #1.

As many have noted, her newer form has stricken her with a rudimentary form of speech which we saw in Empyre #0: Avengers #1.

Then in Empyre #1, Swordsman has her walk off to grab a weapon only to return somehow speaking normally.

Even Thor thought something was strange. It’s also telling Valerio Schiti draws Hulk’s eye in a creepy way in the very next panel.

I think most of us figured it was a random bit to be ignored, but no, it was a huge reveal that Hulk is not who she seems! We find out clear as day in Empyre #4 that she is in fact a plant literally and figuratively for the Cotati!

After pounding Thing and knocking Mantis and Invisible Woman back we find out what Swordsman and the Cotati did to her.

So where does this leave Jennifer? Al Ewing spoke about Jennifer Walter’s experience at the “Next Big Thing” panel during Comic-Con@Home which suggests she is likely very much dead but will return. “How does all of the stuff we’ve been doing in Immortal Hulk — the nature of gamma radiation, the green door, all the stuff with the Below Place — how does all that tie into Jennifer Walters? What’s Jennifer Walters’ experience with that?”

Now that we know Jennifer aka Hulk is likely dead will Ewing pick back up her story behind the Green Door? Likely we’ll find out when Immortal She-Hulk #1 drops in comic book shops September 23rd.
