[Fantasia] ‘The Fourth Wall’ review: Opening night jitters and screams

The Fourth Wall is a horror film that will stun with its surprises.

Written and directed by Kelsey Bollig, The Fourth Wall makes it world premiere at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Tensions are high as serious actress Chloe, played by Lizzie Brocheré, prepares for a French production of Shakespeares’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Strung out on cocaine and fed up with her co-stars, Chloe creates her own adaptation. Fast-paced with nightmarish imagery, The Fourth Wall is a horror film that will stun with its surprises.

Bollig’s The Fourth Wall is a darkly humorous film that features some interesting characters. Chloe is clearly a professional actress, but it’s hard to strive for professionalism when the co-stars are not hired based on talent. Bollig’s directing style, the quick cuts, and sped up images, punctuated with a techno soundtrack punctuate the anxiety in Chloe’s mind. Brocheré gives a standout performance as Chloe as she demonstrates a unique skillset that sets her apart from her co-stars.

Bloody, violent, and funny, Bollig’s The Fourth Wall is one of the short films to watch out for.
