I’ve been excited for Superman vs. Lobo since it was announced in March for a few reasons, but the biggest is it’s ripe for adult humor, featuring some of the filthiest heroes in existence written by Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie — who also collaborate on a sexually-charged comic at Vault Comics called Money Shot — and drawn by Mirka Andolfo, who is known for adultstories. With their powers combined, can they make the extra-sized second issue sing? You betcha!
If you’re unfamiliar with this series, you should go buy the first issue, but if you just want the CliffsNotes: Superman is stuck on Lobo’s homeworld and Lobo is stuck on Krypton. A super-powered alien recreated both planets to thank them, but accidentally put them on the wrong planets. Hilarity ensues with Superman depowered and trying to find a way off-planet; meanwhile, Lobo is bored but soon figures out how to have a little fun.
This book lives and dies by its dialogue, which can be laugh-out-loud funny, clever in how it gets its dirtiness across, and compelling from a character standpoint. It can be a bit too lengthy at times — and truth be told, sometimes the book reads like it’s trying to fill pages rather than tell a well-paced story — but the dialogue is mostly fun. Beattie and Seeley capture the boy scout in Clark and the metal-as-hell maniac that is Lobo very well.

Split between the two is Dr. Flik who pops into both of their worlds to check-in. She’s a scientist and wants to register results, but it’s kinda hard when the entire experiment started off wrong. Andolfo animates her really well, showing her frustration, anger, horniness, and more. She’s a fun character that plays off an almost boring and average-looking Superman and a wildly cartoonish Lobo.
Paired with color artist Fabio Amelia, the art never skimps between the space scenes and the alien worlds. There’s also some good comedy at work, like Green Lantern going splat on something, or a hilarious opening with pigeons talking to Batman. The closing scenes are also fantastic with high-octane action and lots of gore.
If you’re a fan of DC Black Label because of its rated-R nature, Superman vs. Lobo #2 should tick all the right boxes for you. The issue can feel a bit slow at times, but you’re not going to get as big a laugh out of this comic as any other this week. Pick this up for the adult edge and modern sense of humor.
