‘Shattered’ review: Erotic thriller is a fun throwback

The erotic thriller may have peaked…

Shattered is about lonely tech millionaire named Chris (Cameron Monaghan) who meets a mysterious (re: sexy) blonde named Sky (Lily Krug). It does not take long for the two to progress the relationship. When Chris becomes injured, Sky is ready to nurse him back to health. But when Sky’s roommate is found dead from mysterious circumstances, Chris begins to wonder what her motives truly are.

The erotic thriller may have peaked with late night cable television, but the genre will occasionally crop up with a new entry. And just as before, the films are only as good as the two leads. (Well, good sex scenes are also important, but not as much with the rise of the internet.) Shattered has two strong leads, along with some steamier moments.

Sky is different from similar characters. She does not have the same sass or serious attitude often found. Instead, she has an almost girl next door charm. Shattered sticks to the formula more often than not, so it is refreshing to see a different type of femme fatale.

Chris is by the book and Monaghan makes sure audiences can get invested in the character. He also has great chemistry with Krug, which is important since the film does not offer up much different. The main reason Shattered succeeds is due to the two lead performances.

While there is some good tension, the story does not rely on it solely. There are also some decent action scenes. These moments prevent things from getting too stale. All in all, the film is formulaic fun. There are not too many movies like Shatterred these days making it that much more entertaining.

Shattered releases in select theaters and on demand January 14
