‘Superman: Son of Kal-El’ #9 review:  World’s Finest Sons part 2

Nightwing and Superman continue their quest for the truth.

If you haven’t read Nightwing #89, stop what you’re doing and check it out as soon as possible.  Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo pick up the adventure in Superman: Son of Kal-El #9, as we get to see more of Nightwing and Superman instead of Dick Grayson and Jon Kent.  The creative team creates some emotional moments that remind us why we like these heroes in or out of costume.

As I read this issue, one major thing that jumped out at me was Bruno Redondo’s art.  It always catches my eye, and I love how he shows Nightwing in motion.  It takes me back to Will Eisner’s The Spirit with the characters just moving like a locomotive always forward.  Even seeing the multiple Nightwings in action is just as awesome as it gives the page life of its own.   Adriano Lucas is just the perfect pairing with Bruno as they bring their “lively noir” style to Superman.

The credits page is an excellent example of the color Adriano Lucas brings, and I love the light effect he creates as it feel like you’re looking up into the sky.  I like how you can see a difference in the skylines between Bludhaven and Metropolis.  Metropolis is, of course, brighter and inviting, while Bludhaven is darker and grimy, giving each city their own vibe.

Tom Taylor continues the hunt for the hero killers, putting Nightwing and Superman face to face with the trio who murdered Risk and other heroes.  Their battle scene is exciting and highlights the different styles of the heroes and how well they can work together.  I love how the two heroes baited the trio into attacking, as it was a clever, calculated bluff.  It reminded me of the “Castling” move that Superman (Clark Kent) and Batman did back in Superman/Batman Vol. 1 #4 when they took on Hawkman and Captain Marvel.  That action shows the two bonding and trusting, which I think we will see more of in future events.

Jon has to deal with the all-too-real price of heroics sometimes, and you can tell that while he is Superman, he still has a lot of growing to do.  It is a tough job to take on, and Jon is doing excellently, and I love that he is wise enough to recognize that he doesn’t have to do it alone.  The shared talk with Jon and Dick was great, and it felt like such a bonding moment that will lead to this next generation of Superman and Batman trusting each other a lot more than their fathers do.

Bruno Redondo and Adriano Lucas do a fantastic job of creating a perfect vibe for Metropolis just like they did with Bludhaven
The new addition to Nightwing's costume is perfect and my inner Batman: TAS fan is super happy
Tom Taylor does a great job building a trusting friendship between the two heroes
While it was a fun two-part story, it doesn't conclude as strongly as it could, instead it does want you to stick around for more issues of the series
