Batman: The Knight #3 serves another fantastic issue that puts Bruce Wayne in the crosshairs of two dangerous individuals. The first is Henri Ducard, a mercenary/detective ex-colleague of cat burglar The Gray Shadow. The second is a serial killer called The Foundling who kills orphaned men in front of their families and keeps their teeth as a souvenir. Of course, the coolest part of the story is the cops have no idea who The Foundling is, but if Bruce and Henri Ducard can manage to work together, they just might have a shot at cracking the case.
Batman: The Knight #3 drops us right in the middle of a crime investigation where cops have the mansion of Sunrise Oil CEO Hubert Glonet surrounded, suspecting that he’s the next victim of The Foundling. But it’ll blow your mind when you realize who and what is really going on. Throwing readers off from the unexpected twists and turns is some clever writing by Zdarsky. Up until now, Bruce Wayne had the only narration of the story, but as the story progresses, you realize it is someone else.
Hands down, the best part of the story is watching Bruce Wayne, Henri Ducard, and The Gray Shadow/Lucie. When the three of them are getting along, they put their wits and detective skills together to figure out who The Foundling is and find him before he kills his next target.
It’s additionally great because you can see firsthand how Bruce is still far off from becoming the detective we know and love Batman. Here, Bruce is hot-headed and doesn’t follow directions. This is put on display during the book when Bruce, at one point, gets into a fight with another character and loses it, beating the person to a pulp and having to be removed from inflicting more violence upon the person.
The lettering this issue is downright amazing. It’s deceiving and takes the reader down a journey of discovery and shocking revelation. Pat Brosseau knows where to put captions to have an emotional depth to them and help sell the story being told incredibly well. The cherry on top is Carmine Di Giandomenico’s artwork, where the genuine emotion in this book lies in the eyes of each character.
Batman: The Knight #3 is a must-read for sure. The story in its entirety is shaping up to be a true classic in the making and could lead to Zdarsky bringing more Batman storylines of this caliber to the forefront.
