WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD FOR CANDY
The story so far: Candy Montgomery (Jessica Biel) seems to live the ideal life. She has two beautiful children and a loving husband. She has lots of friends and seems to want for nothing. Her best friend Betty Gore (Melanie Lynskey) is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Her husband Allan (Pablo Schreiber) is nice enough, but he also is not around to help Betty with the kids. But was this enough to make Candy murder Betty?
The second episode begins two years before the last episode. This is a great idea as it begins to flesh out Betty’s character. One of the issues with the premiere is that it appeared as if the audience would not get to know much about Betty. While it is good to see Betty get more screen time, Candy does not give her much of a personality. She is needy, over the top, and insecure. This makes the murder victim a very unlikable character. The good thing is Candy has shown that it may be going back and forth in time. This means there may be more opportunities to explore Betty and give more insight into her situation. This is especially important considering how the episode ends.
“Happy Wife, Happy Life” further develops Candy’s character which provides some clues as to why she may have murdered Betty. Her home life is not as happy as it initially looked and she is lacking fulfillment. Adding more depth to the main character also leads to more questions. How did she go from an undersexed wife to a murderer? It will be interesting to see what causes this change and how it affects the close knit community.
The show also delves into the life of Allan Gore (Pablo Schreiber). This makes sense after the premiere leaves viewers wondering how much he was involved with his wife’s death. Much like Betty, Candy teases there is something more to the character but does not quite deliver yet. He seems to be unhappy at home, but there does not seem to be any indication as to why. The end of the episode sets up what direction the show is going in and should shed further light on the situation.
