While certain other books have moved past the Judgment Day saga, Immortal X-Men carries on, taking the fight to the next level. Despite being a very different kind of issue in the series thus far, Immortal #7 keeps the structure the book has been following, with Nightcrawler as the Quiet Council member of focus this time.
At this point in the Judgment Day plot, the stakes are higher than ever, with the destruction piling up by the minute. Immortal has been able to solidify its place as one of the best X-books of the Krakoa era by using these character issues to really delve deep into their minds, showing the reader exactly who they are. Kurt’s issue, unfortunately, doesn’t follow that outline as closely as the others have. The difference between this issue and the previous ones comes down to this: Immortal X-Men (even during its previous event tie-ins) is a character issue first, and a plot-centric one later.
With this formula, Gillen has been able to get inside the minds of so many complicated characters, telling their stories in a compelling manner. Immortal X-Men #7 is still a good book, it’s just not the heavy-hitting character book one would expect from this series, and in that respect, it makes the issue feel a little disappointing compared to the rest of the series in that regard. There’s more plot narration than character exploration, which is perhaps to be expected in an event tie-in.

But does that mean Immortal X-Men #7 is completely devoid of character moments? Not at all. Even with such massive steps in the event’s plot moving forward, Gillen manages to do a small-scale character study on Kurt. Kurt’s inner thoughts paint a picture of who he is, someone who has hope and believes in the future but also isn’t afraid to take risks. Werneck’s art is once again near-perfect, with every page looking drop-dead gorgeous.
Immortal X-Men is still the series in the X-line to beat (right next to X-Men Red), and Judgment Day is still one of the best Marvel events in years, making this a deeply entertaining issue in its own right.
