If you have yet to read Klik Klik Boom, you’re missing out on one of the best comic book series of 2023. The story remains thrilling in issue #4, which continues Sprout’s fight to take down the corrupt Minerva World Services, the company responsible for her father’s death. Sprout finally confronts the guy who pulled the trigger on her old man, but whether she succeeds in getting her revenge remains to be seen. This issue is a wild ride packed with action, emotion, plenty of Polaroids, and a full-on assault involving hypodermic needles you must see to believe.
When I picked up the first issue of Klik Klik Boom, I knew that Doug Wagner had created something truly special. However, I didn’t anticipate the deep emotional connection that I would form with Sprout, a character who embarks on a courageous journey of vengeance. The story of Sprout feels like a love letter to pop culture and pays homage to many of the great comics and action films that have come before it, like Kick-Ass and The Professional, to name just a few.
On the art side, Doug Dabbs does a dope job of creating an emotional connection with the readers through his illustrations. He builds upon the connection in Wagner’s writing by creating important moments like Sprout’s flashbacks to her father whenever she looks at one of her many Polaroids. I love the realism that each of Dabbs’ panels brings out in this book. Colorist Matt Wilson complements each panel well, giving the reader a revelatory feel to a darker tone later in the book. Wilson’s colors add the perfect finishing touches to everything throughout the book.
I can’t stress enough how much I loved reading Klik Klik Boom #4. The story had me rooting for Sprout, hoping that she would eventually get the revenge she seeks and find peace with her rabbit Beatrix and Ms. Biggs, the family she never had as a child. We have yet to determine if they will make it out of the story alive, but I can’t wait to read the next issue.
