Blood Hunt is fully launched, and coming with it is a tie-in series that adds layers to what we know about key characters. Case in point, Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt is a three-issue series that reveals a team meant to suss out what is going on with Blade and why he’s turned against all of humanity. The first issue is out this week, which begins to get the band together while also hinting at what may be going on with Blade.
Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt opens with a scene involving Blade. He has called a special forces unit together, but not to help him. To kill them. Paired with an epic full-page splash to open the book of a church on fire, it’s a shocking and action-packed opening, to say the least. The scene ends with a key moment as we see Blade shedding a tear. Is he a victim, and what is going on? There’s a chance this series may reveal those details.
The meat of this issue follows Tulip, who is attempting to get Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch on board to help her figure out what is going on with Blade. Tulip is Blade’s former girlfriend and has reason to believe something is up with him. Bryan Hill does a great job writing Tulip as she’s edgy, doesn’t take crap from anyone, and acts as a good surrogate for the reader, as she’s not exactly in the know about the dangers of working with Ghost Riders.
This issue reveals what Johnny and Danny are up to, which links in nicely with the events of Blood Hunt. I won’t spoil it, but it leads to an action scene that allows German Peralta to go all-out with Ghost Rider exploding a vehicle. Paired with colors by Arthur Hesli, this book is appropriately dark and steeped in a red hue. Darkness had taken out the skies, but there’s a decidedly evil nature to it, all thanks to the visuals. Peralta crushes whenever Ghost Rider shows up, and it’ll please longtime fans. This scene pauses the main plot which is a bit of a drag, although Danny does point out the reason they’re doing it.
The occult plays a part in this book as Victoria Montesi is looped in. One can see Hill is putting together a new Midnight Sons, which is exciting to see. In a key scene to end the issue, Montesi does a bit of demonic magic work as she opposes a person who is possessed. The scene is well-paced with a creepy vibe straight out of a top-notch horror movie.
Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt #1 has all the trappings of the darker and more evil edges of the Marvel universe. At its core, the creators are on a quest to find out what is wrong with Blade, and it’ll take a brand new Midnight Sons to do it.
