DC Comics is preparing to launch its next universe-spanning event, Absolute Power. Mark Waid and Dan Mora will unleash Amanda Waller, Failsafe, and the Brainiac Queen on the superpower population to shut them down. Yet, how did that trinity of evil form, and how big of a part will Dreamer play in this plan of Waller’s? Get ready to get in on the ground floor to Absolute Power as writers Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Chip Zdarsky, and Joshua Williamson join artists Skylar Patridge, V. Ken Marion, and Gleb Melnikov as they put the players in place.

This one-shot is a rollercoaster of emotions divided into three parts. The first, by Waid, Maines, and Patridge, continues Dreamer’s nightmare of working with Waller. The creative team masterfully places Dreamer in a harrowing position. Waller’s demand for Jay Nakamura puts Dreamer in a difficult spot. The interaction between Jay and Dreamer is so intense it’s hard not to feel for both characters. The depth of their emotions is palpable, making it clear why these two characters will be ones to watch in the main series. Here is an interview with writer Nicole Maines to keep the hype going.

The second chapter has Waid team up with Zdarsky and Marion to bring Time Commander back to life. Being brought back is quite the second chance, and if it comes from Waller, you know you would rather be dead. The creative team keeps the suspense going as the Time Commander has quite the task ahead of him and knows how disastrous it will be if he is successful. The last portion by Williamson and Melnikov answers my biggest question about Absolute Power. I’m thrilled to see how Brainiac Queen and Waller came to be allies, and I like the parallels created here that resemble Superman’s origin. It’s a fantastic conclusion that sets the stage.

Ground Zero is a terrific prelude issue that readers should pick up if they’re curious about the upcoming DC event. I read several DC Comics series and was unsure how some pieces would come together for this issue, especially with the Trinity of Evil. Yet this issue answered that question and more, and now I’m excited to see how Dreamer, Jay, and Time Commander will fit into the event’s issues. I have high hopes for this event and look forward to seeing how the heroes of the DC Universe will adapt to being powerless and up against Waller. Ground Zero lives up to its name and is a perfect setup to answer questions and establish characters for this event. All the creatives have crafted thrilling issues that show how these newer DC characters are in for some intense drama when going up against Waller. Plus, the trinity of evil coming together is an excellent setup for why they’ll have the heroes of the DC Universe running scared.
