‘Endless’ #1 draws you in with a gritty world and a heist gone wrong

‘Endless’ #1 launches today via Comixology.

Writer Curt Pires is back with a new project this week called Endless, with co-writer Rockwell White and artist Diana Nguyen. Billed as a mind-bending science fiction adventure that spans the multiverse, the story centers on a low-level thief. It’s another example of Pires’ longstanding run at Comixology, bending genre and offering something gritty and unique.

Endless #1 opens with a thief named Henry Quan. He’s rushing to deliver a package, or else he will pay the delivery cost. He lives in a not-to-distant future where temperatures are rising, the cost of living is out of control, and folks like Quan can’t get by without stealing. He seems nice enough as we see him take his mother out for a day from the old folks home he can’t afford. Your stereotypical good guy who does bad things to keep his head above water is established.

Enter a job, which Quan reluctantly takes. The writing efficiently sprinkles in details about the head of the latest gig and what they’re in store for. There’s a heist feel to this portion of the issue, which leads directly to their robbery taking place.

Meet Quan.

The robbery is well choreographed by Nguyen, keeping you in suspense as they sneak, climb, and do what is needed to get into a shipping container. Things don’t go quite as planned, and Nguyen doesn’t let up on the thriller aspect as they dodge bullets and make tough choices. Prior to the action scene, Nguyen draws you into Quan’s dilemma with a unique style that almost makes faces and the surroundings have movement. Your eye is drawn to all these dashed lines.

The final few pages are where this series goes from common thugs doing a job to something entirely different. Most of this issue is rendered in black and white with pen and ink, but color is introduced that amplifying the science fiction of it all. Somewhat unfortunately, the synopsis actually gives away what is happening, which should be exciting to read in the next issue.

Endless #1 is a good start to a story that’ll please fans of Pires. It offers a grounded main character in a relatable situation and thrusts them into a sci-fi conundrum.
