‘Green Arrow’ #14 is good superhero comics

‘Green Arrow’ #14 has a healthy dose of the Arrow family.

Absolute Power is one of the most harrowing events DC Comics has had as far as hero hopelessness goes. Waller is taking away their powers, Amazos seem impossible, and Green Arrow is working with her! That makes Green Arrow #14 a must-read if you’re interested in this event, and based on the villain introduced…yeah, it’s important!

Green Arrow #14 is a good superhero comic. It opens with a nice recap of the Absolute Power event, establishing that heroes must lay low. At least, that’s Batman’s order to the Green Arrow family, who won’t stand idly by when their leader is somehow working for the bad guys. With the Amazos somehow more powerful than ever, the family heads out to find the unhinged and crazy Professor Ivo.

Joshua Williamson has a great handle on this family, with each character chiming in and pushing back a bit on breaking Batman’s order. Like any family, they’re not all keen on a plan, but they talk it out and agree they must do what’s best to help save Ollie.

Good recap.

Fans of Green Arrow will delight in the Arrow Cave being revealed, and DC fans will get a deep-cut villain introduced. This issue has enough in it to make it a must-read for a few reasons. Professor Ivo is also a delight, as he got me to laugh out loud once, and he has some crazy Deadpool energy about him.

Ollie fans don’t have to worry—he shows up. It’s a short scene, suggesting he’s up to something. Unfortunately, Williamson is keeping his cards close to the vest, so it doesn’t offer too much.

As far as the plot, this issue is a bit formulaic. It’s a story we’ve seen before, with heroes defying orders, digging up relic villains, and running into unexpected trouble. The family aspect lifts this up from being totally ordinary, but if you’ve read a superhero comic, it all feels a bit familiar.

Amancay Nahuelpan and Sean Izaakse share art duties, and I can’t tell you which artist is which on each page. That’s a good thing, as it creates synergy and never takes you out of the book. The Arrow Cave has a nice Batman feel with all its platforms dangling off cliff edges, but there are some nice details to make it Arrow-specific.

If you like the Arrow family, you’ll love Green Arrow #14. There’s plenty of personality in these characters, including Ollie’s son, while Professor Ivo steals the show whenever he’s on the page.
