‘Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time’ #3 review

Deadpool’s multiversal murder spree hits new highs and darker lows.

Deadpool is on a mission to save the multiverse…after killing many different versions of himself from the multiverse! This is the third in a trilogy of Deadpool killing characters by Cullen Bunn and Dalibor Talajić, and it hasn’t disappointed. X-Men fans better come for the show in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time #3, as they’re his next target. Don’t worry, they’re evil versions of the X-Men!

The cover may show Red Hulk, but over half the issue is devoted to the X-Men and where that leads Deadpool. If there was a theme to this issue, it’s that Deadpool is leveling up, which is where Magik comes in for him, but other iconic characters by the end.

Always coming in hot and bold, Bunn and Talajić open the issue with Storm with a stake through her heart. Magneto’s helmet lies bloody on the floor. This team is in big trouble, and in a detailed, rich double-page splash, we get to see who is left. From Havok to Beast, we get a sense of how these X-Men are darker and evil than what we’ve come to know. It makes it a little easier to swallow that they’re all getting killed by Deadpool.

After a jaunt to Limbo, this issue steers towards two more iconic heroes, each with things Deadpool needs. There’s a subtle bit of character work along the way, as this version of Deadpool is typically miserable, but now he’s having a bit of fun. These drastic scene changes might feel awkward in another book, but so far, it has become the norm so as to show Deadpool duke it out with all sorts of characters.

Talajić keeps things interesting with realistic-looking costumes and plenty of detail. His version of Ghost Rider is quite impressive, featuring good colors by Lee Loughridge. Framing brings you into Deadpool’s head, and there are some fun choices as well, like putting just half of Deadpool’s head at the bottom of the page. Designs for new characters like Wolverine are pretty cool, although the detail drops a tad in the final few pages.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time #3 is a violent, irreverent thrill ride that’s as funny as it is ferocious. With a twisted take on the X-Men and strong artistic flair, it leans into the chaos of its concept while teasing deeper layers to Deadpool’s journey. If you’ve followed the trilogy, this is another must-read chapter – bloody, bold, and full of surprises.
