X-Men Monday #315 – Jason Loo Talks ‘X-Vengers’

Plus, an eXclusive look at ‘X-Vengers’ #1, 2 and 3!

Welcome, X-Fans, to another uncanny edition of X-Men Monday at AIPT!

With a column like X-Men Monday, if you ever focus an edition on a topic that isn’t clearly associated with Marvel’s merry mutants, there’s always going to be one person somewhere on the internet ready to point out that “This isn’t X-Men.” For instance, if I decided to do an installment of X-Men Monday about Jed MacKay‘s Avengers series, I feel like that’d be warranted. After all, Jed also writes X-Men and has had Cyclops’ team appear in the title more than once. And let’s not forget that Storm — Earth’s mightiest mutant — is currently on Jed’s Avengers team. But with all that very sound logic in place, I’m confident at least one person will take to the keyboard to fume about the free article no one is making them read.

Anyway, thank Revelation this Avengers comic has an “X” in its title!

That’s right, X-Fans, the X-Vengers are coming to protect a mutated world that hates and fears them. It’s the latest twist on a classic Marvel team, X years later in the Age of Revelation. And writer Jason Loo is back to dig into Dani Moonstar’s team ahead of X-Vengers #1‘s release on October 29, 2025. Let’s see what he has to say.

AIPT: Welcome back to X-Men Monday, Jason! X-Vengers is quite the concept with a lot to unpack. But before we do that, how did this particular Age of Revelation series come together? Was this something you pitched?

Jason Loo: It was something I pitched to Tom Brevoort after Jed MacKay shared his early outline of Age of Revelation at the Marvel Summit back in March. My pitch originally started as a way to reunite the New Mutants alumni, having Dani, Sam, and Roberto search for their old pal Doug, who’s now the mutant messiah Revelation. Like Willard on a mission to find Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now

And seeing that this event didn’t have an Avengers title — and with Sam and Roberto being former members, I jumped at the chance to make this one.

AIPT: You know, I kind of assumed X-Vengers had some New Mutants DNA. During your first X-Men Monday appearance, way back in May 2022, you mentioned your first X-Men comic was New Mutants #54. X-Vengers has Dani, Cannonball, Doug, and the Technarchy. And, Hawkeye, Shang-Chi, and the other Avengers are basically new mutants, right?

Jason: Haha… the New Mutants DNA is pretty strong in this book. Dani, Sam, and Doug are in the forefront. There’ll be a new Technarch variant that’ll be all over this series. And yes, Shang-Chi, Clint, Natasha, and Scott are the New Mutants. I’ve come full circle.

AIPT: Dani Moonstar, wielding Captain America’s shield and leading the X-Vengers. X-Fan Sergio Davila Fan says this is a bold idea and, along with X-Fans National Born, wonders what inspired it.

Jason: It is a bold statement, for sure. And it’s why Moonstar doesn’t call herself Captain America. But she’s the Avengers’ team leader that that world needs, taking up the mantle to continue working toward the dream that Steve Rogers fought for. It’s a promise she’s kept since his passing to the X-Virus. And being in that position as a mutant, she knows she’s going to face lots of criticism. But Cap’s shield is a familiar, hopeful symbol to show everyone — both humans and mutants — that she’s their protector… whether they like it or not.

AIPT: X-Fan Phil loves Dani and asks what informs your approach to writing her.

Jason: I think Dani makes a great, nurturing leader who strengthens her team through their traumas. We’ve seen that in her time as a teacher at Academy X, and with her New Mutant friends on Krakoa.

This Avengers team that she’s rounded up is broken. The surviving veterans are struggling with their new mutant status, wearing their flaws and insecurities. And Dani knows she’s up to the task of lifting these heroes up again.

AIPT: Considering Dani and Doug were once friends and teammates, X-Fan Alex is curious what Dani thinks of Revelation’s actions.

Jason: Dani and her Avengers try to keep a careful distance from Revelation to maintain what little trust they have left with the rest of the world. They’re more estranged than ever. But you’ll have to wait and see how their face-to-face plays out in the series.

AIPT: What considerations went into selecting your X-Vengers lineup? X-Fan Barrett wants to know what drew you to these specific characters.

Jason: As I mentioned earlier, Dani, Sam, and Roberto were my first picks to tell this kind of story. And also, I’m a New Mutants fan. But I thought the story would be more interesting with Roberto as part of Revelation’s Seraphim.

Then, my editor Darren Shan recommended we stack the roster with A-List Avengers, which was really cool to have the permission to play around with their new approach and new mutant powers.

Including Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Vision made this feel more like an Avengers book. Clint brings this relaxed, cool presence — which I channeled from the Matt Fraction and David Aja run. Black Widow can get any job done in her creative way. Vision is a wealth of knowledge to the team. And I always wanted to work on a Shang-Chi book, so this was a good opportunity to include him. He’s the team’s heavy hitter.

AIPT: X-Fan Sestyn is curious to learn whether Natasha Romanova is Water Widow, which you alluded to, and why Giant-Man is now Variable Man.

Jason: I can confirm that Natasha is Water Widow. And Scott Lang is Variable Man. And why that name? When Scott was exposed to the X-Virus, he gained the ability to alter the size of any body part, as well as the density of his tissue molecules, ie, impenetrable skin. However, it’s also left him malformed, unable to shape back to his usual self, no matter how hard he tried. Here’s a rough concept I drew of Variable Man.

AIPT: X-Fan Alex asks how you came up with the mutant powers for characters like Hawkeye and Shang-Chi. And X-Fan Harry G wonders if the decisions were based on the characters’ personalities or just spontaneous inspiration.

Jason: I wanted to give these characters a random mutant power/feature that would be an inconvenience to them. Think of this Avengers team like The Mighty Ducks or the Bad News Bears. They all had to relearn what they were good at with their new abilities, all thanks to Dani and Sam’s coaching. So Hawkeye had to coordinate how to shoot arrows with extra arms. Shang-Chi, a master of precision, had to learn not to break every single thing he touches. And Natasha had to learn how to hold herself together. Literally.

AIPT: X-Fans Captain America News and Mario B both noticed President Sam Wilson mentioned in X-Vengers #3’s solicitation. Will we learn how he took office and potentially became an adversary for Dani’s team?

Jason: You will see how their tensions will build throughout this series. And you’ll have some idea of how Sam took office, even though this story takes place a few years into his presidency. He might even be in his second term.

AIPT: Finally, you’re collaborating with artist Sergio Davila on X-Vengers. What can readers expect from Sergio’s visuals?

Jason: Just like our collaboration on Werewolf By Night: Red Band, Sergio brings a lot of spectacular action shots in every issue. There’s so much detail in each of his panels, and he nails the right facial expressions that you’ll feel the weight behind the quiet, emotional scenes and the ones with so much tension.

AIPT: And readers will get to see just what you’re talking about in a second — but first — Jason, thanks for stopping by X-Men Monday!

Remember, X-Fans, X-Vengers #1 goes on sale October 29, 2025. Here’s an eXclusive look at the issue’s lettered preview from writer Jason Loo, artist Sergio Davila, inker Aure Jimenez, and letterer VC’s Joe Sabino, courtesy of our friends at Marvel.
