‘Man Finds Tape’: Engaging mix of true crime & found footage

Did I just watch something?

Man Finds Tape combines true crime, found footage, and straight up horror in a story that is both engaging and confusing. Lynn Page (Kelsey Pribilski) is called back to her hometown of Larkin, Texas by her brother Lucas (William Magnuson). He has stumbled across a mysterious tape that has garnered him a large following on social media, but has also dragged him into a dangerous secret.

Mixing a number of different styles can lead to overload. Directors Paul Gandersman and Peter Hall makes sure that is never the case here. Man Finds Tape is an intriguing watch from the get-go. The mystery is a fun one that keeps viewers guessing. It could be real, a hoax, or something along the lines of a ghost hunters show.

Man Finds Tape remains interesting due to the way it melds everything together. The film bounces seamlessly through the different genres. There is never a moment that feels out of place. This is especially important when the third act takes a twist. What could have been a jarring reveal is handled smoothly.

The flip side is taking on so much does lead to some plotting issues. There often is not enough explained. Motivations are never clearly laid out and the timeline can be hard to follow. This is most evident in a situation involving Lynn. A nagging question throughout the Man Finds Tape is why is she not affected the same way as others. It is answered in a throwaway line that amounts to the “I don’t know”.

That being said, Man Finds Tape is an absorbing watch. The true crime aspect will have fans wondering where the story is going to go while the found footage side brings added tension. By the time the movie heads into its chaotic third act, audiences will be fully invested by the shocking reveal.

Man Finds Tape is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and on demand.
