‘Baby Garfield’ #3 is infinitely relatable

From hating healthy food to being freaked out by a scary movie, you’ll find yourself relating to something in this issue.

Baby Garfield is back, and this issue has a slight focus on his hate of vegetables and healthy food. I really like how this issue has a theme connecting the stories even though the stories are self-contained.

EXCLUSIVE BOOM! Preview: Baby Garfield #3

We get to see Baby Garfield’s first beach day and first thunderstorm, which are both very cute stories. “Baby Garfield’s First Beach Day”, written by Jordan Morris, feels like a classic Garfield story but has a lot of modern elements, which makes it very relatable. There are plenty of cute and funny moments in this story, like Jon being more concerned with how people are perceiving him than having a fun day at the beach, which is something that a lot of us are guilty of. Baby Garfield using Jon’s healthy snacks as a way to get the junk food that he so desperately wants was clever. There’s also a funny moment after a guy throws Garfield after getting caught on his sticky mitts because he could sense that Garfield wanted to be thrown.

While the story is cute and relatable, I’m not the biggest fan of the art style. The art is a little rough and ragged, and doesn’t resemble the comic strip style. Thien Pham shines at making Garfield very expressive in every panel, however.

“Baby Garfield’s First Thunderstorm” written by Katie Cook shows Garfield, Jon, and Odie going through an experience that many of us know all too well: watching a scary movie during a thunderstorm. This story reminded me a lot of the Garfield cartoon I used to watch as a kid. The art by Jay Fosgitt is very animated which contributes to the cartoon-y feel. Garfield, Jon and Odie are trying to watch “Vegan Zombie 5” during a thunderstorm despite all three of them being terrified. Seeing Garfield put his disdain for Odie aside and trying to work with him because he’s scared was very cute and heartwarming, considering that both Odie and Garfield are still young. Jon struggling to move around his house in the dark while trying to make sure that the food doesn’t go bad is something that most of us have experienced at least once.

Baby Garfield #3 gives us funny and relatable moments that keep a similar feel to the classic strip comics in modern situations.
