Dark Horse announces ‘Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight—Villains and Vignettes’ anthology series

Mark Waid, Mike Mignola, J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire, Dan Hernandez, and more join the world of ‘Minor Threats’ in a new four-issue anthology series arriving this October.

Dark Horse Comics is returning to Twilight City this fall with a new anthology series packed with all-star talent.

Announced today, Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight—Villains and Vignettes is a four-issue anthology that expands the world of the acclaimed superhero crime saga created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, Scott Hepburn, and Kyle Starks. The new series will spotlight the desperate villains, washed-up heroes, and strange citizens who inhabit Twilight City through a collection of standalone stories from some of comics’ most celebrated creators. The universe is closing out its latest miniseries that wraps up in July.

The first issue alone boasts an impressive lineup.

Mark Waid and Scott Kolins reunite for a story centered on a shady entrepreneur selling supplements that promise superpowers, with predictably disastrous consequences. Oswalt and Blum then team with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola to tell the tragic origin of the deceased kaiju whose remains have become part of life in Redport. Scott Hepburn also contributes a story with artist Cary Nord that explores the formative moment that transformed Frankie Follis into Playtime.

And that’s only the beginning.

Future issues will feature J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire reuniting for the first time in more than a decade, Hannah Rose May and Justin Mason returning to collaborate following their work on Rogues’ Gallery, and screenwriter Dan Hernandez joining forces with The Boys co-creator Darick Robertson.

Jordan Blum described the anthology as an opportunity to bring together both legendary creators and rising talents.

“This volume of Welcome to Twilight was an absolute dream come true, bringing together iconic creators who inspired the comics we write as well as some of the greatest up and coming talent who constantly make us jealous – all unleashing their twisted brains on the world of Minor Threats and populating new corners of our fantastic city. And I don’t use “dream” lightly, I’m still not sure we actually got to write a story for Mike friggin’ Mignola. If this was a prank, no one tell me.”

One of those new stories comes from Hannah Rose May and Justin Mason, who will introduce readers to a pair of morally flexible attorneys serving Twilight City’s criminal community.

“Two years ago, Patton and Jordan signed a Minor Threats poster for me and invited me to come play in their world. I thought they were kidding, turns out, they weren’t. It’s been such a blast teaming up with them, reuniting with the extraordinary Justin Mason and getting to tell a story in this rich universe. Every supervillain needs a good attorney (or a slightly corrupt one), and that’s exactly what Goldstein & King are. Get ready for objections to be sustained in this all-new story, Supervillains at Law, from the world of Minor Threats.”

DeMatteis expressed excitement about returning to work with Kevin Maguire while expanding the Minor Threats universe.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure playing in the Minor Threats sandbox and adding to the amazing universe Jordan and Patton have created. The icing on the cake has been reuniting with one of my all-time favorite collaborators, the great Kevin Maguire, for the first time in more than a decade—and launching a new (almost/kinda/sorta) superhero team. Hope everyone enjoys The Superlatives.”

For Mark Waid, the project provided an opportunity to tackle a particularly unsavory corner of Twilight City.

“I was flattered to be asked to participate, knowing what a murderers row of talent has already played in the Minor Threats sandbox. To be paired once more with Scott Kolins was an even bigger thrill. Our story is about the Alex Jones of the MT Universe–a sleazebag selling supplements that’ll give you powers–and a very dissatisfied customer and, boy, was it fun to write.”

Kolins was equally enthusiastic.

“This trashy story about trashy people was all sorts of trashy fun. Damn you, Waid. Really hope we get to do it again!”

Dan Hernandez said the anthology gave creators the freedom to push ideas as far as they wanted.

“The opportunity to work in the Minor Threats universe alongside a pantheon of comic book rising superstars and all-time legends, including my friend and collaborator Darick Robertson, is beyond my wildest, nerdiest fantasies. Writing Minor Threats is like being given permission to speed on the highway, to do everything you’ve ever wanted to do as a creator no matter how crazy or reckless. All gas, no brakes.”
