Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #4 Review

This week brings us the concluding issue to the first story arc of IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe.

Is it good?

Observations

  • Gotta admit, Michelangelo makes a pretty good battering ram.
  • Kind of weird seeing Stockman not being a complete douche.
  • Good thing Donnie’s got that bionic/metallic shell.
  • Yeah, these are way cooler (and better) than Mousers.
  • Once again, Zodi is my spirit animal.
  • Uh…didn’t she get shot?
  • HA! Nice try, Raph.

Is It Good?

Yes, but the wheels did start to come off a bit.

Considering that this was supposed to be the story’s climax, it wasn’t anywhere near as exciting as the previous issues. It also waives off a major occurrence from the third issue that was a big part of the build up leading into this one.

I still absolutely hate the way Raphael is being written, but that gets canceled out some by Zodi, who might end up becoming my favorite non-reptile character in the TMNT mythos. I also like the way Allor is building an overarching threat for the Turtles (Bishop/EPF) while also giving us a skeptical viewpoint (Detective Lewis) from inside its operation.

On the art side of things, Couceiro turns in another great issue, although I wish we’d gotten to see the same level of action and violence that we got in issues #1-3. That being said, he definitely makes the most of it when the EPF storms Stockman’s building.

And speaking of Stockman, how weird is it to feel yourself root for him a little? Allor deserves some serious credit just for making him into a likeable character, even if it was only for a few panels.

Let’s hope that next time Allor gets a turn writing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe (which will hopefully be soon), he accelerates rather than slides to the end.
