I had never read Food Wars! until volume 33, but I think I'm hooked for life. The blending of underdog heroes who cook so well they literally blow people's minds is an exciting angle for storytelling, especially with food television being so popular. In the latest volumes of this series, the main characters are competing in an international food competition against a colorful set of villains who go work as team noir. Witness a woman who cooks with a chainsaw, a juggling clown who cooks with special balls, and more. It gets weird, it gets intense, and it's all kinds of entertaining!

After a bit of tantalizing One For All lore and a hint at Shinso's future, mangaka Kohei Horikoshi sets up the next major arc: My Villain Academia.

Levius/est is a series set in the 19th century in a post-war era where M.M.A. fighting is king. Not that kind of M.M.A. though -- here, M.M.A. stands for Mechanical Martial Arts and each nation has its own fighter. It's a series that recently got a Netflix TV show in America and serves to mix fighting with steampunk in a cool way. Series creator Haruhisa Nakata brings some impressively detailed pencils and layout design to a book that's visually stunning in its fights, its fantasy dreamscapes, and its character study.

I was floored by how ingenious, clever, and funny The Way of the Househusband volume 1 was. It took the ever-present concept of a violent gangster and spun it on his head as he is now retired from killing but is just as intense as he was in the streets. Taking washing dishes and grocery shopping as seriously as life and death is a funny concept that Kousuke Oono has accomplished very well. The idea also works very well in the short, chapter-based manga storytelling method as each of the nine vignettes in this second volume stand alone. At the same time though, there's a building towards a more complex story, be it meeting the main character's parents, a fellow retired Yakuza who now has a crepe truck, or how "the immortal dragon" finds ways to get exercise.

Full disclosure: Persona 5 is one of my favorite video games in recent years. Also, I do not read manga regularly. And when I say regularly, I mean ever. But when the opportunity to review a manga adaptation about what is possibly my favorite PlayStation 4 game came about, I didn't have to think too hard. I have all sorts of P5 merchandise. Adding a comic that retells its excellent story was a no brainer.

Even in a series which ascribes personhood to animals, anthropomorphizing them and mapping human conflicts onto them within and without, the premise of a hen selling her unfertilized eggs to the school store--as with all things in Beastars--took me aback. Nevertheless, as with all things in Beastars, I submitted to mangaka Paru Itagaki’s worldbuilding whims and read on. And to be fair, hens lay eggs. It'd be a waste to just throw them out, so why not make some extra spending money while contributing to the carnivores' vitamin intake? As readers of the series know, carnivores are prohibited from eating animal flesh, so unfertilized eggs are a great source of protein.

Going strong for two plus years, historical fiction Golden Kamuy continues to unveil the tips and tricks of staying alive in the early 20th century as its characters attempt to find a massive amount of hidden gold. It's a series I've liked and sometimes loved, but can it sustain our interest as it continues to avoid letting these characters find the gold? That's a question I ponder every time I open the latest volume...

If you have flipped on cable in the last ten years (or maybe more) you know food television is the rage. There's a new show with a twist every week and we can't get enough. May I interest you in a food manga? Food Wars is not new--we're on 33 volumes and running--and it even has an anime to back it up. That said, having only dabbled in the series and randomly picking up the 33rd volume I have to say you're missing out if you're a foodie, a Food Channel connoisseur, or if you love fun twists this edition of Food Wars may be just the thing for you.

One-Punch Man is one of those series that has taken on a life of its own now that the anime is a hit in America. The concept behind it allows it to make fun of and comment on superhero comic books. In the recent volumes we've also seen it capture the heart and horror of monsters. As writer One and artist Yusuke Murata have explored lead character Saitama and his malaise at being the greatest fighter ever they have done a great job exploring the world and the many characters around him. This volume is no different.
