Back in the days of middle school and high school, I was a huge fan of The Drifting Classroom. It was my favorite manga of all time at that point and I was such a fan that I even edited its Wikipedia page. The series is no longer my favorite nowadays, but I do still have a fondness for it.

One of the most important elements a manga needs is a good storyline. Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that Radiant has it. Packed with whimsical characters and magic, this manga may have started off a little slow but it has built up to a great conflict. There are some issues that I have with it, but it really looks like Radiant will be a manga that I'll continue to keep tabs on. Written and illustrated by Tony Valente and published by Viz Media, Radiant takes us to a world of monsters and magic.

Over the past year I've tried to expand my manga reading beyond just popular shonen series. I've delved into more horror and boys' love, but one genre I still haven't read much of is fantasy. Record of Grancrest War, published by Viz Media, recently caught my eye as a fantasy manga with potential. It's written and drawn by Makoto Yotsuba, and based on a novel series written by Ryo Mizuno and illustrated by Miyuu. The series' debut volume collects its first six chapters, which introduce the core cast and some basic lore. Does Record of Grancrest War get off to a good start?

When it comes to delivering pure over-the-top fun, few manga are more consistent than Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma. The last volume marked the start of the duel between Central and the resistors, with thrilling matches marked by unconventional ingredients and cooking methods. The latest installment, Vol. 27, collects chapters 227-235. These feature the judgment after the tournament's second bout, as well as most of the third bout. Do creators Yuto Tsukuda, Shun Saeki, and Yuki Morisaki mix drama and culinary creativity together as effectively as usual? Is Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma Vol. 27 good?

Kazuma Kodaka's Border has impressed me ever since its debut volume. The character work has been fantastic, as each installment has honed in on a different core character's backstory. The interpersonal dynamics between the protagonists, a quartet of gay detectives, are also great. Their close-knit but platonic bonds are heartwarming to read about, especially since such relationships between gay men are rare in fiction. Border Vol. 4 collects chapters 16-21, which consist primarily of an extended flashback to Yamato and Sugo's time together in high school. Does this installment meet the same high bar as past entries in the series?

Bloom Into You has been getting positive attention lately thanks to its anime adaptation. But what about the original manga? When I reviewed the first volume I found it very enjoyable, thanks largely to creator Nakatani Nio's lovely art and focus on the characters' interpersonal relationships. Vol. 2, published by Seven Seas Entertainment, picks up after the results of the student council election. Nanami tries to revive the annual school play tradition much to Yuu's chagrin, and some of the supporting characters become more prominent. How does this installment compare to the series' debut? Is it good?

By combining frequent plot twists and effective suspense with charming character development, Astra Lost in Space has become one of the most consistently engaging manga in recent memory. The sci-fi shonen comic, created by Kenta Shinohara, has also impressed with its creative alien designs and stellar pacing. The time has come to bid the series farewell, however, as its latest installment is also its last. Of course, its not unusual for a comic to excel throughout its run just to drop the ball with its ending. Does Astra Lost in Space Vol. 5 stick the landing? Is it good?

The late '90s and the '00s were an in imaginative time for depictions of technology in fiction. Computers and the internet were still relatively new enough in the popular consciousness to seem full of possibilities beyond just doxxing and Nazis on Twitter. As a result, there were a lot of anime (Digimon, Serial Experiments Lain, Summer Wars) that explored just what exactly the internet could be and how people could interact with it. Despite its good reputation I never got around to watching Summer Wars, so when Vertical Comics recently republished the manga version I was eager to check it out. Summer Wars: Complete Edition collects the entirety of the comic written by Mamoru Hosada, drawn by Iqura Sugimoto, and featuring character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. How does the manga hold up nearly a decade after its original release? Is it good?

In the landscape of contemporary shonen manga, few titles are more popular than The Promised Neverland. Looking at the series' consistency over time, there's little wonder why--it's excellent. Writer Kaiu Shirai and artist Posuka Demizu have crafted a thrilling mystery full of revelations that leave one hooked even as more and more questions arise. The series' newest installment, Vol. 7, is a pivotal one. Upon finally reaching the hidden shelter at B06-32, the escaped cattle children meet a Nameless Geezer who's far from pleased by the prospect of sharing his sanctuary. As tensions rise within the group, Emma, Ray, and the Geezer decide to venture to Godly Pond. Naturally the journey is dangerous, and more of the manga's lore is revealed along the way. Does this volume live up to the high expectations created by its predecessors?
