‘Mini Marvels: Spidey-Sense’ brings back the fun of comics

How far would you go for cereal?

The Mini Marvels are back in print, and this edition is a great way to get new fans into comic books. This trade paperback contains some hilarious epics from the Mini Marvels’ adventures, which take fans back to a simpler era of comics in the form of comic strips and one-and-done adventures. Chris Giarrusso created the Mini Marvels in 1999, and you would find their adventures in the Bullpen Bits as comic strips. They were such excellent bonuses in the comic as they were light-hearted fun. Now, you can get a large portion of the series as a gateway to humor for yourself or as a gift.

The appeal of the Mini Marvels can come in many different forms. Writer/artist Chris Giarrusso has a great sense of humor and can perfectly play a joke that hits each time without exhaustion. His art style makes the characters fun and very approachable. Mini Marvels is a series anyone can pick up without worrying about inappropriateness or being bogged down with comic book continuity. Typically, these stories poke fun at superhero tropes or character types. As a classroom teacher, this is a perfect book I can leave out for students as a beautiful invitation to comics and the Marvel Universe.

For the stories inside, you get Paperboy Blues, Cereal Quest, Civil Wards, the classic strips, and more that will entertain you for a complete reading of this collection. Chris Giarrusso handles all the art to keep the style tight, and for some of the adventures, writers Sean McKeever and Marc Sumerak team with Giarrusso to add more hijinxs. The opener with Paperboy Blues will be a reminder of how fun Spider-Man can be, even given the current woes of his modern series. Giarrusso takes the dramatic elements of Spider-Man and adds a sharp humor that will bring out a chuckle in any comics fan. Just wait till you see his renditions of J. Jonah Jameson and Venom. The inside jokes about Spidey’s identity are played perfectly with Aunt May and JJJ.

Cereal Quest is a hilarious adventure that will remind Wolverine that even though he is the “best at what he does,” that doesn’t mean he will have it easy. In that adventure, you’ll see the inspiration from Charles Schulz. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments that you might find people asking about what you’re reading. I love the bits about Daredevil having an ego and how he is in the wrong direction in group shots due to his blindness. It is fun to see Hawkeye’s brashness amplified, and then he has to cover up his bad deals. This trade is an excellent reminder of the joy of comic books and strips that will be a fun read.

Chris Giarrusso tackles the Marvel Universe with a sharp wit and comedic timing that will have you laughing as you devour this collection. His writing and art style are perfect ways to poke fun at the heroes as they face their dramatic tropes with perfect facepalms. How far will these superheroes go for a job or a bowl of cereal? This will remind you why comics are fun, and if given to a new fan, this could be their gateway into comics.
