Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Godzilla Half Century War #4

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

James Stokoe

Brendan: Stokoe continues to impress with this King of All Monsters mini series. I love his constant use of cool pinks and blues (colors no one in their right mind would liken to Godzilla) and the jarring effect they have on the image. Speaking of jarring, the idea of any object being large enough to dwarf Godzilla really sends me for a loop. It is a most impressive sight.

Dave: It’s not everyday an artist can be ID’d simply because of the color palette which goes to show you Stokoe always offers something different. His interior work has been ultra-detailed, and I find it interesting that detail is seen in the clouds and crystal on this cover more than Godzilla. I like this choice at it brings a lot of flair to the scene.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Lot 13 #3

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Glenn Fabry

Dave: I can’t stop looking at this cover! The detail is incredible and my eye seems to wander for minutes on end over the disgustingly beautiful scene. What really sells me though is the Native American’s eyes. Creeptastic.

Brendan: Jesus, how horrifying. The level of detail here in impeccable. The anatomical correctness delivered within this gore is something all future creeper artists should aspire to. This cover is making me say both “nope” and “yes” at the same time. It’s a rare occurrence.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Willow Wonderland #3

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

David Mack

Brendan: I just love looking at Mack’s art. The simple yet detailed shading of Willow’s figure is absolutely perfect. I also love Mack’s ability to layer his images and the 3D effect that can give the final product.

Dave: I never did think Willow was very attractive…until Mack started doing these covers. I love how he’s done the abdomen and her expression gives the viewer the sense that she’s in control. Without that I’m sure this would be a little horrific considering the tentacle.

American Vampire # 34

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Rafael Albuquerque

Brendan: With simple positioning Albuquerque has given an entire story’s worth of emotion. The reds and purples give off a certain heat when accompanied by the blaring white from the background. I’m not entirely sure what the sunflower adds to this cover but, hey, it’s nice too.

Dave: Whoa; is that flower turning into the sun? I dig it, particularly the watercolor effect going on in front of the characters.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Prophet #32

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Simon Roy

Dave: Prophet is one trippy science fiction story I can’t help but love and in most cases it’s introducing incredibly vivid and surreal stories. This cover conveys that with the shadows of the aliens, the giant bug and the very cool and articulated space suit. All of which pops right at you due to the serene starlight.

Brendan: I love the space background and the shadowy figures cascading the rocks in the foreground. Personally, I feel the character in the middle is a bit hard to read as far as details go. I think the cover could have benefited by making him a bit larger.

Colder #3

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Juan Ferreyra

Dave: Those are some creepy arms touching our lady in gold. Maybe there’s a whole lot of Goros, but something tells me the wisps of colored smoke imply this is one messed up dream.

Brendan: I love the colors used here. Not only is our golden lady perfectly juxtaposed against the charcoal-black and ever-extending arms, but the feint watercolor background really gives the whole scene a very dreamy vibe.

Talon #3

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Guillem March

Dave: I really dig the perspective of this cover, but what really sells me is the reflection on the knife. It adds a sense of realism lacking in most covers. The cloud cover and cityscape also pull it all together into a scene I want to fall into.

Brendan: All in all I find this cover to be… fine, I guess. It does seem somewhat generic, although the detail given to the background and knife reflection are much appreciated. I don’t really think anything here has a “wow” factor of some of the other covers this week.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Iron Man #5

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Greg Land, Carlo Pagulayan, Jimmy Cheung

Dave: I like my Iron Man like a head on a stick and we get it this week indeed. As I understand it this issue will take place in space and I suspect Tony might…lose his head? Ahem…this cover doesn’t do anything for me. It doesn’t imbue any emotion besides boredom.

Brendan: I mean, the stars are pretty. I also think the Iron Man mask is well done. Really there isn’t much here to critique. It’s just a bit too simple.

Russ:: Nice try, Iron Man Pez dispenser salesmen! I’m on to your not so surreptitious ploy, you damned charlatans!

New Avengers #1 (Variant cover)

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

J. Scott Campbell

Brendan: While it’s nice to see Campbell whipping up some art that isn’t oversexualized half-naked bitties, I can’t help but feel that he missed the mark with this cover. I honestly can’t think of the last time I saw a J. Scott cover that featured males, but these gents here aren’t exactly quality. I suppose it is something of a positive note that regardless of gender, all of his creations look anorexic.

Dave: I thought “Half-Naked Bitties” was his middle name! You’re right, Dr. Strange needs to eat something. Also Black Panther looks rather comical as if he’s been hurled into the air and instead of doing a cool pose appears to be flailing his arms uncontrollably.

Batman Inc. # 6

Comic Book Preview: 1/2/13

Juan Jose Ryp

Brendan: I’m not sure if Damian is covering his eyes to honor the blind lady justice, or if he also can’t stand the way that Talia has been drawn.

Dave: I’m just glad they managed to fit her cleavage into this shot. Considering the angle at which she’s been drawn it’s a wonder you’d even want that in there.
