Is It Good? B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #109 Review

I just wish there were more B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth comics to review. I don’t have enough of these. Honestly, I’ve lost track of how many I’ve reviewed. Let’s just get this over with…

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #109 Wasteland Part 3 (Dark Horse Comics)

For a change, we have Mignola and John Arcudi writing this one. I’m sorry to say I skipped out reviewing Part 2; it happens from time to time, I’m only human. A shame, because Part 2 was quite good. As is this issue. All kidding aside, this arc is the one where the gravity of the end of the world has really hit the hardest. The inclusion of cutting back to the B.P.R.D. headquarters, and following characters on the ground level is one thing. We’ve had this in many of the other arcs. Yet, Wasteland is almost like a summation arc for the other Hell on Earth arcs as of late. In Part 2 we hear Dr. Kate Corrigan discussing how things in Russia went on a recent mission with the leader of the S.S.S., Director Nichayko (this is in reference to the Cold Day in Hell arc).

Wasteland Part 3 follows a team on the ground, the same one we’ve been following, who are trying to get to Chicago. Now they are looking for a boy named Lucas, who wandered off while the team was asleep in Part 2. Don’t worry about why they started (I don’t remember either), but it’s an immersive issue. The team even finds the guy who went back in time in the Abyss of Time arc! Who knew we’d see him again. They find him in a coma.

The writing in this issue, particularly the dialogue, is heartbreaking and exciting. And it manages to relate to other arcs; an impressive feat.

Laurence Campbell does a brilliant job on the art. His monsters are very intimidating.

His facial expressions hit you like a hammer to the gut.

You’re down there in the streets with the agents, and you feel their fear, you can sense their outrage and disgust. Not to mention his scale work is phenomenal. Mutated humans are much larger than us, and you know this because of Campbell’s fantastic proportional work.

  • Manages to tie into the Abyss of Time arc.
  • Art is great, large in scale, great facial expressions, and scary beasties.
  • Writing makes you feel for the agents, and survivors.
  • How many times can one be expected to react to, in essence, the same story?

Is It Good?

It’s an awesome issue. A good ending to the arc. The art is amazing. So why not a perfect score? Because despite the emotionality, and the cool monsters, and even the tie-in to another arc, and character I never thought I’d ever see again, we’ve all seen this before. You can’t keep playing the same notes for every song, and expect to elicit different responses. It’s an arc worth reading, and it is one of the better issues and arcs. But if something wildly revelatory doesn’t happen soon, what’s the point of it all? It’s just agents we’ve never seen before save Johann fighting monsters in a world that has been overrun with monsters. This fact has already been established time and time again. If nothing new gets brought to the table soon, there’s only so much longer I can watch the same monsters attack more nameless B.P.R.D. agents.
