Is It Good? My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #18 Review

It’s been a while since we last checked in on this fun little comic. Let’s take a break from all the grittiness, darkness, and writers attempting to be overly dramatic and check out some magical ponies. Is it good?

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #18 (IDW Publishing)

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Princess Celestia has returned from her journey into the magical mirror that Star Swirl created many eons ago and things have gone worse for the world. An evil alternate version of herself and her sister are causing mayhem and chaos among the citizens of that world, leaving the good alternative version of King Sombra unable to do anything. To try fight them, Celestia sends the Mane Six and Spike into that world to see if they can help. The question, is will they be able to do any good there?

Don’t question it Applejack. Where Pinkie gets things she pulls out of nowhere is best left as a mystery.

As expected, this was a pretty good and enjoyable issue of the series overall. The story in particular I liked the most with the characters going to an alternate dimension where the world is much different than their own, bringing back memories of the DC Multiverse and various Star Trek episodes. It’s a fun premise and some of the rules regarding how each respective world works is interesting and a concept I hope is explored more in future issues. The only really downside to the story is that the ending is a bit predictable and not as surprising as the characters make it out to be (I called the ending from the last issue easily).

The writing from Katie Cook is strong as usual. The characters are all still portrayed accurately (I do like the extra backstory given to Celestia to flesh out her past) except maybe Princess Luna is a bit too much of a jerk to her sister at points; the dialogue is good, the humor is strong as always with tons of great lines and gags sprinkled throughout, and the story flows well. Sure, it would have been nice to see a bit more of this alternate dimension, but that’s a minor nitpick in the grand scheme of things. It’s a great comic overall and definitely still worth the time for fans of the series.

I didn’t want to see your stupid alternate world anyways.

Andy Price’s work is pretty much what you come to expect from him at this point in the series. The characters don’t look 100% like they do in show like other artists’ have been able to convey, but Price makes up for it with a fantastic and wide range of facial expressions that really do infuse the characters with plenty of personality. The humor hits well and often thanks to Price’s art and the layouts overall look great. It’s another well-drawn issue of the series as you would expect.

Is It Good?

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #18 is another hit for the series with its all-star team of Katie Cook and Andy Price. A great story, good writing, and fantastic artwork really do make this comic a worthwhile read for any fan or young kid who wants to read comics.
