Injustice 2 is comic book gold. Issue #8 brings the some of the darkest storytelling, as well as some of the most fun in comic books today. With not so much action to bring to the table in this issue, it’s well stocked some great dialogue and suspense and then some hilarious comedic moments by Batman Plastic Man. If you haven’t picked up Injustice 2 yet, it’s not too late. Some of the best storytelling and characters are all here.
Ra’s Al Ghul is the villain, and has taken complete control over our heroes’ lives by taking their children hostage. Kidnapping a sidekick or a parent is one thing, but the taking of their children affects everyone’s emotions and attitudes and you can tell right away no one can think straight without feeling a great amount of anger. Green Arrow and Batman have some heated arguments that give me goosebumps when I read it because the conversations that transpire between the two is so real and effective I felt like I was in the same room as the two.
Damian Wayne’s character development just keeps surprising me. At this point I don’t ever see a change back to the hero side, but in his heart you can see him showing more concern and care for the newly resurrected Alfred than you’ve seen him show in a very long while. This new zombie Alfred is showing little to no signs of consciousness but the possibilities for this character are endless. After all this ends, will we see Batman take care of this Alfred, or will we eventually see him meet his demise once more?
The art was near perfect in this issue with lovely character designs and color that made the issue pop. No character looks too similar to another and the transforming moments with Plastic Man and his son looked amazing.
Tom Taylor’s writing is phenomenal. I don’t know how many time I can praise this guy. Alfred being resurrected from the Lazarus put, Ted Kord being murdered, and the comedic moments like Plastic Man make these issues of Injustice 2 comic book gold. In only eight issues he’s managed to have moments that will make you tear up, moments that make your jaw drop, and then moments that will make you smile and feel genuinely happy inside. The entire team behind these stories have done a more than perfect job making comic books matter again.
Plastic Man makes his return to comics and it couldn’t have been a better introduction. I’m still smiling just thinking about how this character can make such a sudden return and show you just how much you’ve missed this character. No panel he was in was wasted whatsoever and he had some of the funniest laugh out loud moments in recent memory. Plastic Man is told in this issue he’s basically the “chosen one” and will help lead the Justice League to victory. This is opening up a whole new unexpected excitement to the next issues of injustice. The Justice League is about to get a makeover.
Injustice 2 #8 goes from being one of the darkest issue to being one of the lightest. These issues just keep getting better. Not only do they have a zombie Alfred, but we also get to see a character who’s been away from comics for quite some time now: Plastic Man.
