Green Lantern fans hold onto your butts because Hal Jordan is going to fight off a giant robot killing machine this issue. The robot’s purpose? Kill Orion. No big deal.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“FALL OF THE GODS” part two! Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner face off against God Killers as they try to protect an injured Orion from certain death. As the battle turns against the Corps, will they have to sacrifice a New God to save an entire sector of space?

Why does this matter?

This is a high octane sort of issue where Kyle and Hal have to push themselves to think fast and fight faster. Robert Venditti has been writing some of the most epic and action packed Green Lantern stories for some time and he’s aided by artist Rafa Sandoval.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps #27 Review
Whoa!

Whoa does Sandoval knock it out of the park with this issue! Opening with a full page splash of our heroes looking like ants underneath the literal boot of a giant robot, Sandoval draws an awesome opener. Using blur and perspective the reader gets the sense that the danger is very real and coming in hot. The issue utilizes perspective very well either to show how Hal looks very outmatched or to show off the constructs in big and beautiful ways. Orion gets a highlight double page layout involving a risky surgery operation to save the day complete with Kirby style cosmic bubbles and a hell of a lot of cool layout work. This book looks like a million bucks and is gripping in its visuals.

The story is what you’d expect from Venditti these days when it comes to big action. The guy knows how to plot well and keep you on your toes. I could easily see the events in this issue filling the last 20 minutes of an awesome Green Lantern movie. Once the dust settles there’s more myth and lore to explore via an interesting mind meld moment (which looks gloriously beautiful in another double page layout) and this scene directly ties into what is going on with Dark Days: Metal. The issue wraps up well too as Venditti sets up the stakes and the new direction Hal will be going in for the next story arc.

This issue also serves as a nice conclusion to the current arc while deftly handling the set up of the next one. Venditti doesn’t pull his foot off the gas and yet manages to weave in the exposition well.

Dang, hope Hal is okay!

It can’t be perfect can it?

One could argue there could be more interesting constructs in the issue, but those folks will be few and far between. This is an awesome action-packed issue. Period.

Is It Good?

This issue raises the level of awesome to 10 and keeps that needle there till it breaks right off. Big action, awesome art, and a tie-in to DC Comic’s big event. Action fanatics: You couldn’t ask for more.
