Last issue, writer Robert Venditti wrote a meaningful story about fathers and sons, which spills into this one as Hal Jordan aims to keep Highfather alive. As beams of destructive power chase him through space only Hal’s ability to go at intense speeds in a fighter jet construct keeps them alive. Just another day for a Green Lantern, eh?
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
“FALL OF THE GODS” part four! The Green Lantern Corps draws the line between the Godkiller Robots and the Source Wall. If they give an inch, the Corps gets pushed into the wall and the Godkiller Robots pull Yuga Khan free, plunging the New Gods into devastation.
Why does this matter?
The magical metal that is driving DC Comics’ latest event ties into this current story arc. Also, Venditti knows how to write epic cosmic tales that make you go all in with the wonderment. Need we say more?
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Wicked color.
If it’s more you want, how about the art by Rafa Sandoval, which is god damn gorgeous. It’s detailed, but more importantly is great at capturing the size and scope of the situations and aliens. The Green Lantern Corps go up against some massive Celestial-looking aliens that are huge and powerful. Sandoval doesn’t let you forget that for one second. Tomeu Morey adds some incredible colors to the mix (just look above) and manages to use those pretty cosmic circles very effectively. The action is in your face and the drama is high with this issue.
Speaking of drama, this issue delivers quite a bit on that front as John Stewart hears a single name and realizes he can’t be sitting back and strategizing anymore. The Corps must go into full out war with some unknown powers but it’s their will and heroism that pulls them through. There’s an epic battle here that Venditti writes in satisfying ways. The key is never losing sight of the stakes and never truly making the reader comfortable until the dust has settled. Someone get Jerry Bruckheimer or Michael Bay on the phone with Venditti because he must have an epic trilogy worthy idea they could put on screen.

It can’t be perfect can it?
The ending doesn’t have an amazing cliffhanger or even any real bead on where we go from here. If this is the last issue in the story arc I wasn’t left knowing the story is complete either. It’s a perfectly fine ending, but given the loudness of the story, it left me wanting.

Another awesome action-packed issue as the Corps go to war and the hugeness of cosmic threats is rendered beautifully.
