Dastardly and Muttley has been an interesting journey into characters of old that I watched as a young kid. I was excited to see Garth Ennis would be bringing them back into the comic world. However, the first two issues weren’t exactly what I was expecting and going into the third issue, I had my reservations. Would the third issue finally grasp my attention that I was hoping it would in the beginning? Oh, the suspense!
What kind of shenanigans are Dastardly and Muttley into now?
Therein lies the problem that I have had with Dastardly and Muttley. With these two guys, I wanted a lot of shenanigans! Don’t get me wrong, there is mischief going on thanks to a rogue drone flying around spewing toxic garbage everywhere, leading to cartoony results. But I was looking forward to more of a slapstick style comic book. Dastardly and Muttley #3 starts out with promise — Ennis opens with a scene in the White House, the president surrounded by his advisers. You see, the President has bashed a Senator over the head with a huge mallet on live TV. The media, his advisors, and the general public frown upon this. But seeing the President rationalize his actions is so amusing, it is like Ennis has written Trump into this comic book. The only thing missing is the use of Twitter.
Meanwhile, Dastardly and Muttley are still on the run. They intend to steal a plane to make their escape. Little do they know, two airmen have been briefed on the War Pig drone, as well as Dastardly and Muttley. They have one mission: Kill Dastardly and Muttley! Oh, the horror! What will happen next? For once in this series, I am interested in what will happen next. And if someone can point Trump in the direction of a harp, I would greatly appreciate it. *wink wink*

Ennis has lured me back into the story. This series was desperate for laughs and a little more action/suspense. Dastardly is growing into the cartoon character from the television series; likewise for Muttley with his signature laugh. Mauricet and John Kalisz’s art has been the saving grace of the series so far. I like the cartoonish, catastrophic fallout the War Pig leaves behind. The style of Dastardly and Muttley are a taste of the old school look, mixed with more modern times. Visually the book is spot on. I am just thrilled the story has finally caught up with the artwork.
Dastardly and Muttley #3 is easily my favorite issue of the series thus far. It has humor, it has action, new characters are introduced, and the feeling of danger is finally there for Dastardly and Muttley. I hope Garth Ennis keeps his foot to the floor and continues to finish this story with a solid second half.
