What strange thing is happening to Avengers members in ‘No Surrender’?

First the planet disappears, now this.

Needless to say, there are SPOILERS ahead. You’ve been warned.

It’s finally here, the big Avengers tale that’s meant to unite present team members with past, and to restore consumer confidence in the comics. It’s a story so big that Marvel itself went ahead and spoiled two of the biggest plot points of “No Surrender” ahead of time — that the entire Earth has been “stolen” from its orbit, and that the moral center of the the team, Jarvis the butler, has apparently met his demise.

But what REALLY necessitates the calling in of reserves is the fact that key individuals in Avengers #675 are being “frozen” — in time? Captain America, Spider-Man, Janet Van Dyne, Black Panther, Vision, Squirrel Girl, the X-Men and the Champions are all victimized by this strange affliction.

The “cliffhanger” ending is not unexpected, either, as the reserve-caller is revealed to not be any of the usual suspects, but the new character Voyager, who has somehow inserted herself into continuity as one of the founding Avengers.

So who stole the Earth? Are they responsible for the “frozen” heroes, too? Whose side is Voyager really on, and how did she alter the past? As all Avengers books have folded together for the duration of “No Surrender,” the next puzzle pieces, in the form of Avengers #676 arrive, in just a week’s time.

Avengers #675, from the writing team of Mark Waid, Al Ewing and Jim Zub, and artist Pepe Larraz, is on sale now.
