One of the best things about the various Telltale series of video games is the ability to make choices that affect the story in unforeseen ways. In a moment, players have to decide how to respond to verbal cues, physical attacks, or any number of other potential situations. In the comic collection prequel to their Guardians of the Galaxy game, Telltale’s team of writer Fred Van Lente and artist Salva Espin put their own spin on this choose-your-own-adventure video game through the eyes of Star Lord.
The story of the comic plays out much like the video game series. The team lands on a planet looking for The Blood Brothers, a pair of Thanos’ lackeys who have murdered their way across the galaxy. In the first fight, Star Lord has a moment where he looks at three different things happening on the battlefield and decides to go for the Mirano, his personal ship. Throughout, Quill makes a number of binary decisions that affect the direction of the comic, usually angering Rocket Raccoon in the process.
Along the way, the team meets up with Cosmo, the telepathic Soviet spacedog, watches Drax destroy beings in mental combat, and deals with having new friends as they fight Thanos, the Mad Titan, and his deadly Black Order. Seeing Drax blow the heads off of psychic warriors just from having such a literal and closed mind is amazing. Introducing Cosmo as the only other creature who can understand Groot gives an interesting dynamic to the long-term friendship between the sentient tree and the trash panda.
The story Van Lente has written is a fun adventure worthy of the Guardians and the art is perfect for the irreverent team. As a lead-in for the video game, it gives a clear idea of the standard Telltale choose-your-own-adventure format in a pretty inventive way, considering the book itself is in no way a CYA comic. Fans of the Guardians or the Telltale games will certainly enjoy the book and Telltale’s take on the popular team.
