It’s not everyday comic publishers drop high numbered comic series, but here we are with Daredevil #600 making history. Anniversary issues like this offer up a couple of important guarantees. More pages of story and some shocking twist to make those casual readers go, “Hmm I gotta read the next issue.” This issue has both.

Why does this matter?
Charles Soule and Ron Garney are here to deliver an oversized issue (with a Foggy backup by Christos Gage and Mike Perkins) and aim to please longtime readers (subplots continue here) as well as older readers (you aren’t going to believe the twist).

Now everybody get into your superhero pose!
Charles Soule has been writing a strong series with Daredevil focusing on his legal side with Matt Murdock and a sidekick turned hero Blindspot on the hero side. Probably the most unique aspect of his Daredevil is how he’s using a new law that allows superheroes to use testimony in trials they picked up while masked and saving lives. It certainly brings up a moral issue of sorts–can we really trust these masked heroes to tell the truth and isn’t it against the law to eavesdrop on people in their homes–but it also adds an interesting legal element in the superhero life. This issue opens with Daredevil relaying the plan to listen in on a group of heroes (from Spider-Man to Moon Knight a lot of the street heroes are there) and from there the story progresses.
The biggest takeaway after reading this issue is how Soule has cleaned the slate for a big-time arc to progress. I won’t spoil it, but Kingpin as mayor gets flipped on its head, the heroes will all need Daredevil after this one, and Blindspot goes through a major transformation. It’s the perfect culmination on the last page that’ll make you want more.
The backup by Gage and Perkins is a nice ode to Foggy Nelson. It captures all the good times and bad times between he and Matt, but also how unselfish he’s always been. By the end, you get a resonating feeling that Foggy has the superpower of patience and love for his friend. Perkins does a great job with this story too, as he captures intense Daredevil moments via montage like layouts. It’s good stuff.

It can’t be perfect can it?
The Blindspot portion takes up a good chunk of the story and I imagine longtime Daredevil fans just joining the story will be lost. Daredevil doesn’t end up doing much battling at all in the story either and rather cuts out of the action all the heroes were waiting to jump in on early. There is an intense action scene with Daredevil later in the issue though.
Is It Good?
Daredevil #600 capitalizes on the increased interest anniversary issues have by dropping a major twist that will change Matt Murdock for some time. It’s a beat that will create more interest down the line and is executed deftly here.
