Annihilation: Scourge – Beta Ray Bill #1

Words by Michael Moreci. Art by Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque.

I’m a fan of cosmic Marvel stories, but only when they’re done right. Speaking as someone who hasn’t even read every Annihilation: Scourge book, I loved this one and I have to recommend this to everyone who likes a lot of fun and big action in their comics. This is an easy pick up even if you haven’t been reading the series and quite possibly one of the best Beta Ray Bill stories ever. Put it on the list! (10/10)

Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #6

Words by Gerard Way & Jeremy Lambert. Art by Omar Francia.

So many comics are stale, safe, and leave you feeling unsatisfied. They lack vision and feel purposeless. To be completely honest, I don’t always know what Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds is doing. I have not yet found the meaning behind Wild Ass and his baguette throwing, scooter riding, CG shenanigans. What I can say is that every issue of this miniseries has delivered an engaging, unique experience with a core of intense heart. It challenges the medium and has extremely honest discussions. This is the Doom Patrol doing what they do best, and it’s been one of my favorite miniseries of the year. It’s a really special comic, and it’s worth every penny. (10/10)

Vampirella/Red Sonja #4

Words by Jordie Bellaire. Art by Drew Moss.

With this issue, even when not focusing on half of the titular duo, Jordie Bellaire tells an impactful and emotional story, yet still finds time for humorous character interactions and world-building. This issue builds beautifully off of what longtime fans will know of Red Sonja as a character, but also nicely develops her for readers who have come to the character through this series. (10/10)

Year of the VillainL Ocean Master #1

Words by Dan Watters. Art by Miguel Mendonca.

From the beginning of the issue, one can already feel the added nuance this team is bringing to the character. Orm has always felt dragged along by the plot or Aquaman’s needs. Never has he felt truly in control of his own actions, but that changes here. In Ocean Master #1, Orm’s character defines his actions. When he confronts Erin, the woman he loves, he is ashamed. He can’t even look at her. Back turned, head down, and phenomenal shadowing from Mendonça, you get the sense that not even Orm feels like he deserves to speak to her; not until Erin demands Orm look at her. (9.5/10)

Moribus #2

Words by Vita Ayala. Art by Marcelo Ferreira.

Morbius is a character that has a fan base, but never really sustains his own series. You can see that in the legacy numbering on this issue, which shows he’s had 43 issues. Vita Ayala and Marcelo Ferreira are on a great start in bringing this series to a new place that may just sustain a chunk of issues. In the last issue, go read it if you haven’t already, Morbius is written extremely well and the action is intense with a horror bent reminding us he’s no hero, but a monster. In issue #2 that couldn’t be more the case. (9.5/10)
