The most polarizing movie sequels ever

‘The Last of Us Part II’ is the not the first time it’s happened.

The Last of Us Part II has been polarizing audiences since before it was even released. There seems to be no middle ground, as people seem to either vehemently hate it or passionately love it. In retrospect, a person could see it coming a a mile away; Still, the emotion on both sides is pretty shocking. This is not the first time that audiences have disagreed so much about sequels, however. Here are some of movies’ most polarizing sequels of all time.

New Star Wars Trilogy

The most polarizing movie sequels ever

Star Wars fans are a fervent group that have a very deep connection with the franchise. This leads to the highs and lows of any installment in the series being magnified. Since The Force Awakens was released in 2015, the new movies have divided the franchise. Recently, fans who cannot stand the series have speculated that plans are in motion for Disney to erase the new movies. Those who like the new trilogy, laugh off these claims as unsubstantiated and just plain silly. Meanwhile, casual fans – the vast majority of the audience – get annoyed by both sides.

TRON: Legacy

The most polarizing movie sequels ever

The sequel to the 1982 classic was hotly anticipated. It seemed like everyone who saw it also could not stand it. Over the years, it is clear that is absolutely not the case. Legacy seemed destined to be one of those movies critics loved and the audience did not care for. Instead, it is now seen as underrated and a worthy successor by some. Others insist it tarnished the Tron name.

bruno

This is not a direct sequel but a spin off from Da Ali G Show. It directly references star Sasha Baron Cohen’s previous film Borat in its marketing, however. The expectations of the previous movie may have been what make bruno so polarizing. Being crude and offensive is always a risk and Cohen may have gone back to the well too soon. Disappointment may be a better word than dislike, but there are those who really enjoyed Borat who cannot stand bruno. Still, there are people who find it even funnier than Borat

Back to the Future Part II

The most polarizing movie sequels ever

Back to the Future is one of the most beloved movies of all time. Though the first ending to the first lets anyone watching there will definitely be a sequel, it still was going to be a hard act to follow. Some people hate what it did to the story. The original was a charming adventure story that weaved in a tale about a bully being shown his place. Some will argue the second has an overstuffed story that makes it hard to enjoy.

Others love the sequel’s depiction of the future and talk about the iconic hoverboard scene. The story also got a whole lot darker than anything in the original.

The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence)

polarizing sequels

The Human Centipede is one of the most overrated movies of all time. The idea is inspired and exploitation fans may get a kick out of it, but it is mediocre at best. The sequel is absolutely horrible. Trying to go in a different and “deeper” direction, Full Sequence is about a fan of the original movie. He decides to capture the stars from it and make his own human centipede.

It is a stupid as it sounds but fans will talk about the creativity and how it does a great job of addressing critics of the first movie. They will also point to how it weaves in social commentary and is genuinely scary. All the over the top violence is holding a mirror up to society. A prime example of how using the term “meta” to describe a movie usually means it is crap.
