‘Chickens’ review: A frank look at police brutality and fear

Police brutality affects black lives in so many ways.

The country is facing one of its most tumultuous periods ever. Racial division has never left this country. There are just long periods of time where the majority are willing to overlook the deep rooted problems of the United States.

Chickens is a horror short that is willing to take a long hard look at one of the biggest sources of divisiveness today. The movie is about a pair of police officers who are at a diner. There is a black couple at the table and the dead body of a black male on the ground.

This is not a traditional horror movie. The horror in Chickens is rooted in real life horror. The story immediately throws the audience in an uncomfortable situation. It is incredibly tense and is hard to watch since it is based in reality.

Director Briyan Keith Montgomery Jr. also tackles another chilling reality. The movie deals with something that is forefront of the public conscious now more than ever. Chickens tackles a reality that black people have to live with everyday: the idea of being wrongfully murdered by the police.

Using flashbacks and social media Montgomery does a great job of drawing the audience into his story. The movie is coveys a sense of fear that goes beyond the “grabbed from today’s headlines” blurbs that are used to draw attention. It is easy to forget it is a work of fiction and not another video got by a bystander. This is the most frightening thing about Chickens.
