F is for Finn

Finn Star Wars

Finn was a Force-sensitive human male Stormtrooper turned freedom fighter during the waning years of the New Republic and the rise of the First Order. Born around 11 ABY during the New Republic era to parents he never knew, Finn was abducted by the First Order to be trained with a new generation of stormtroopers and given the designation FN-2187. Though the First Order trained their soldiers from birth to be extremely loyal and obedient, FN-2187’s conscience broke the military and mental conditioning when he was forced to take part in the massacre of the village of Tuanul on Jakku.

Realizing that he couldn’t continue to be a soldier and killer for the First Order, FN-2187 freed a Resistance prisoner — Commander Poe Dameron, who refused to call the Stormtrooper by his alphanumeric designation, and coined the nickname “Finn” instead. Together, the pair escaped a First Order Star Destroyer and crash landed on Jakku. Separated from Dameron after the crash, Finn met the scavenger Rey and the droid BB-8, and together the unlikely trio escaped the planet in the legendary starship, the Millennium Falcon, shortly after which they crossed paths with legendary Rebel war heroes Han Solo and Chewbacca.

While journeying with Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, and BB-8, Finn transitioned from desiring an escape to the Outer Rim and a quiet peaceful life to becoming one of the most important members of the Resistance. The former Stormtrooper possessed vital information the Resistance needed to destroy the First Order’s planet-killing superweapon, Starkiller Base. During the attack on Starkiller Base, Finn was nearly killed by Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel, and following the destruction of the base and the healing of his wounds, he continued to work as a vital member of the Resistance; helping the Rebel group during the Battle of Crait, and to rebuild its ranks after it was nearly wiped out by the First Order.

Together with Rey and Poe Dameron, Finn located a Sith wayfinder that led the Resistance to the planet Exegol where Darth Sidious, the Sith Eternal, and the Final Order where preparing to launch a fleet that could destroy any planet in the galaxy. By the time of the Resistance’s final battle against the First Order at Exegol, Finn had risen to the rank of General and led ground forces during the Battle of Exegol. During this battle it was revealed the Finn was Force-sensitive.

Finn had black hair, brown eyes, and dark brown skin. Following his desertion from the First Order, the first article of clothing he received was Poe Dameron’s jacket, which the pilot let him keep, telling Finn “it suits you.” As a Stormtrooper, FN-2187 was marked by First Order leadership as having officer potential for his exceptional marksmanship and battle acumen. During Finn’s escape from a Star Destroyer and later from Jakku, he showed his exceptional abilities as a gunner in two different starships, and later again while escaping Sinta Glacier Colony.

Despite having no training and eventually being defeated, the brave Resistance fighter was able to hold his own against Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel, even managing to wound the formidable Dark Side user. In addition to being incredibly brave in the face of certain death, Finn also possessed exceptional leadership qualities and put them on display on numerous occasions while with the Resistance; helping to rally troops and raise the spirits of his friends with his words and actions.

During the Battle of Exegol it was confirmed that Finn is Force-sensitive. This was hinted at several times during Sequel Trilogy, such as when the former Stormtrooper sensed Kylo Ren’s presence on Pasaana, discovered the Final Order’s navigational signal, and when felt Rey’s death. At this time it’s unknown if Rey has taken Finn as her first Jedi apprentice.
