‘On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey’ review: More grounded take on search for Bigfoot

A different type of cryptid film.

On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey is another documentary from Seth Breedlove and the crew from Small Town Monsters. As the title suggests, the film is a continuation of the six part miniseries. The film is much more than just a hunt for the famed cryptid. It is also the chronicle of a person finally getting out of quarantine. The two narratives help it stand out from other releases about sasquatch.

As usual, Breedlove tackles his subject in a different way. There are plenty of documentaries that go into Bigfoot lore and discuss sightings – though that is here, of course. Following migration tracks is the impetuous for the journey. On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey does away with the sensational aspects the genre is known for. Manufactured excitement is replaced by genuine entertainment.

On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey is as much about Breedlove as it is about the creature he is researching. At first, this sounds like a bad thing. There are many monster hunter type shows that make the mistake of being about a bunch of people hearing things at night while running around with a shaky camera. That is not the case here. (Though argument can be made there are too many scenes where nothing is happening.) The documentary is about the group rediscovering their love of adventure. It is an unexpected and refreshing aspect.

Seth Breedlove has done an excellent job of bringing something new to the overcrowded Bigfoot genre. His works come from a more skeptical point of view without being condescending. This leads to a more genuine approach that an also be enjoyable to even the most ardent nonbeliever. On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey is another entertaining release from Small Town Monsters.
