Olympic gold medalist wrestler Gable Steveson signs with WWE

WWE has had their eyes on Steveson for months.

Gable Steveson, who won a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics last month, has signed a contract with WWE, according to the Wrestling Observer. Steveson also alluded to the news on his Twitter account.

Steveson has long been rumored to be interested in pursuing a career in professional wrestling after winning Olympic gold in amateur wrestling, and has teased meeting with Vince McMahon and other WWE officials several times. He also made an appearance at WWE SummerSlam this past month, alongside fellow wrestling gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock.

In addition to winning Olympic gold, Steveson an NCAA champion and Dan Gable award winner.

Of course, Steveson won’t be the first Olympic gold medalist wrestler who has made the jump to sports entertainment. He will be following in the footsteps of Kurt Angle, who won the gold medal in 1996 (with a broken freakin’ neck) and went on to become one of the most celebrated Superstars in WWE history. Current WWE Superstar Chad Gable also competed in the 2012 Olympics.

WON notes there are no known details about his contract or his start date, nor do we know whether he’ll work through WWE’s Performance Center before debuting on the main roster.
